My apologies if there is already a thread about this, I took a look but didn't see anything.

Has anyone tried the 7D's Macro AI Servo AF with a true macro Canon lens? How does it work? In the videos on the B&H website, Rudy Winston seems to think it's the cat's pajamas, but I'm curious if anyone has actually had real success with it in the real world.

Thanks very much. :)

The problem with Servo and macro lenses is when you get too close to the subject (bellow minimum focusing distance) the lens will immediately jump and hunt back from infinity.

So if your trying to shot at 1:1 handheld, the servo will do more harm then good.

Warl0ord this was the case with normal cameras and AF with macro lenses - but the 7D has a new macro dedicated AF setup (that kicks in automatically when focusing at macro distances with a macro lens attached and using AI servo). As far as I know this works with all canon USM macro lenses but I have no idea if it also works with 3rdparty lenses that have similar focusing setups (Eg sigma's HSM).

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Oh, didn't noticed the Macro AI Servo AF.

Hmm, sounds interesting if it doesn't jump to infinity any more. But not sure if it will be able to track at low light of high magnifications

According to Rudy Winston, it's great for macro shots of things like flowers moving in a slight breeze, etc...

He also said it was only with Canon macro lenses.
