I'm asking this not to pair one type of lights against another but in search of some answers on when to or not to upgrade.

Strictly dealing with the quality of light, not build, recycle times, mount type, etc., are professional strobes that much better than entry level strobes such as Genesis or Bees?

I currently have Genesis 200 strobes and they seem to work fine for me. At what point, if any, do you move up to "higher end" strobes for studio work.

The quality of light will be similar because its all going to come from a small point of light.

The chances in quality of light will come from using different modifiers, especially with larger modifiers that eat a lot of light; the entry-level strobe will struggle, where a stronger strobe will still have power to spare.

The reasons often cited for upgrading to higher end strobes from bees or genesis (other than power) are consistency of power output, consistency of color across the power scale, and shorter flash duration. As for quality of light, its impossible to tell which brand of light made a particular photo. But the higher end gear may allow you to create the image you want more consistently.

For me the price difference for what i do between my alien bees and some very high end strobes is not woth the $. I mean the bees dont do everything that others can but i get crisp good colour light and i know how to control them. Depending on what you want to do with the lights i think has a big deal with how much you want to pay

Just throwing in a few cents here... I believe that the Genesis are fairly well thought of in the consistency department, but are supposed to have pretty slow flash duration (there has to be some compromise at their price).
