For those that have done this is there any chance that the tape tears and gets inside the camera or lens? Just kinda curious about the process pertaining to an EF 400mm f/5.6L Lens using a 1.4x TC.

Thanks

Sorry don't have an answer but I'll be curious if you get this to work. With my 7d and EF 400mm f/5.6L and a taped 1.4x TC it would try to focus but would just forever to lock if I was lucky at all. It was a Kenko 3000DG Pro.

I used electrical tape when I was taping pins and it never got in the camera or lens.

Um that is interesting after hearing of users having success with it.

That was my thinking, to use the 3M stuff. Wasn't sure if it was too thick or not though.

There's a reason why Canon disable AF with lens combinations with an aperture smaller than f5.6. It's because the AF system needs enough light to work. And, in all but very good light, at f8 or worse, there ain't gonna be enough. With the 20D to 40D the AF system could handle it better than the later models - that may be where you're heard of it working OK.

That quite possibly could be the case as it was older postings that indicated success with doing it.

Get cheap tamron non reporting 1.4xTC. That will work much better than canon 1.4xTC with taping pins.

Er, how? In fact I would guess that it would be the other way around, if only tiny bit, as the Canon probably has better light transmission.

I would think the IQ would suffer w/ a cheap TC.

Cnaon is better quality wise but AF is slow even with taped pins. Cheap tamron works real nice particularly when using with 400mm f5.6. Try it.

Surprisingly IQ is quite good with that TC.

Search for Daneilla's shots on pbase.

She used to use cheap tamron 1.4xTC on her 400mm f5.6 and you can't even tell that TC was used.

Shouldn't be a problem...I used the tape trick with a Kenko Teleplus Pro 300DG 1.4x and a 100-400L on my 5D2...focusing at dusk wasn't a problem (this was at 560mm, effective aperture f/8 ):

I have (well, with a 100-400) and there's no difference both the non-reporting TC and a decent TC with taped pins behave the same - crap.

It seems Argyle's photo is hardly "crap", a beautiful shot. I have a Kenko Pro DG 1.4X and it gives satisfactory IQ with my 100-400, but does not autofocus. I have ordered a non-reporting Tamron 1.4X specifically for the 100-400, and when it arrives i will report how much IQ suffers compared to using the Kenko Pro (and how much it suffers compared to the lens alone), and also if it autofocuses with my 40D and 50D.
