I've done all the research and trying reduce the footprint of my gear. I can get close to the price of a 1Ds Mark II if I sold my other cameras.

I know I'd lose FPS but the AF is basically the same between the 1Ds mkII and the 1DmkII coorect?

Also, is there anything else I lose or would the 1DsmkII basically cover what my two cameras do now?

Thanks in advance

Get the 1Ds MK II. You will love FF all over again with the better AF.

What you'll lose is some versatility and a backup body. With just one body you risk being without a camera. Having full frame and 1.3x gives you some versatility with your lenses, you will lose some reach on your 80-200 by losing the crop body. And you lose the high frame rate of the 1D Mark II. Personally I'd trade the 5D for a 1Ds Mark II and keep the 1D Mark II (you can share batteries between them) but only you can decide if you need two camera bodies and 8.5 fps.

Both good points, anyone else want to chime in?

Do you need a back up body? Do you need a FF cam that is light and portable? Do you need 8fps? If the answer to these three questions is NO, then the 1dsmkII is a great camera.

Just a week ago, my dry cabinet has 5D1 and 5D2 in it. I just sold the 5D1 and topped up for the 1DsMark2. I can't say what you will miss for 1D Mk 2 but here are some of my comparison with 5D1:

1) ISO performance for 1DsMk2 at 100% pixel peeping is probably 1 stop worse off than 5D1. At 5D1, I don't mind using ISO 3200, but 1DsMk 2 ISO 3200? I will avoid it. Please take into account that 1DsMk2 has more megapixels and I didn't try upresizing the 5D1 images.
(please don't flame me for this; it's just a personal opinion).

2) 1DsMk2 auto focus is really much quicker than 5D1.

3) 1DsMk2 battery seems to last forever compared to 5D1.

4) 1DsMk2 shutter lag is really much better than 5D1

5) 1DsMk2 controls are harder to use - but still get used to it within 1 day of usage.

6) 1DsMk2 4fps feels much faster (maybe because of better focus and shutter lag as well).

7) 1DsMk2 is heavier but for most guys in normal usage, it's not too bad. And you'll appreciate the good build.

Still I have no regrets, overall I felt that 1DsMk2 at the 2nd hand price was a bargain and a worthy upgrade from 5D1.

Jasonleehl,

Now that you have 1Ds2 and 5D2, what's your say about 1Ds2 vs 5D2?

Personally, I'd go with the 1DS2 hands down.

Jasonleehl,

For landscapes and portraits, 5d2.
For events and street shooting, 1Ds2

if there is only one camera to choose, I take 1Ds2. Hope I helped u out.

Well, I read everyone's suggestions and did more research. I went ahead and bought the 1Ds Mk 2 and will test it side by side with my 5D. I have a feeling I will be selling the 5D and the 1D mk 2 to make up the money for the 1Ds.

I figured I don't really need 2 bodies and if I do, I'll buy a cheap little 20D in case something breaks down.

thanks for all the suggestions

Hey mdrtoys, any reports?
I'm thinking about moving from 5D to 1DsMII as well. Mainly b/c I'm doing more events/low light shooting and really want faster response from the shutter, slightly faster fps, and more reliable/faster AF (especially off center).

A buddy who has a 5D and 1DsMII tells me that the higher resolution is noticeable and that the noise level is about the same. Only thing I have to deal with would be that lousy small LCD and the quirky ergonomics (I had a 1DMIIN before and never liked it but I guess I can relearn it).
