I am not saying that limited edition prints are dead, but rather asking that if anybody who has experience with LE prints can shed any light on the following.

I had a meeting today with a large commercial supplier of art. (They sell to hotel/motel chains, restaurant chains, hospitals, etc.). During our conversation, I was told that limited edition prints have lost popularity and are out of favor right now.

Understand this would not be limited to photography. Their LE sales would also include original paintings that have been scanned, and LE prints made from them. Understanding that, I asked about photography and was told that LE prints, across the board, have fallen out of popularity.

I'm wondering if anybody has read any blogs, magazine articles, etc. recently along these lines recently and can shed additional light.

(As a side note, there is good news: I mentioned this in another thread, but thought I would quickly mention it here. This rep also stated that over the last year or so, there has been surge of popularity in traditional photography.)

I've heard rumblings along the same lines, but not first hand.

Personally, I've never seen the point behind limited editions. From a buyer's standpoint, I mean. Ok, it's limited. So what? Doesn't make it any better. Just means it costs me more money. No thanks.

As a seller, I'd love that. ;)

This is indeed good news.

Limited edition prints aren't dead. They are sharply rising for me, personally.

One mass commercial supplier of art is a needle in the haystack and hardly representative of the whole population of artists. Limited edition prints are luxuries, marketed as better than or special from open series, rare, unique. They have value based on who it is selling them, the collector interprets that value based on how well the artist is doing or how well they will do or how well they are doing. Value, like anything, is dependent on a variety of factors...depends on who you are, what your priorities are (fill up the wall, have something nice, invest in a rising artist or an established one).

In my opinion every artist should have a limited edition series. They may not be popular for the first 2 years but maybe they will as the reputation of the artist grows.

Originals are hot right now i hear. Anyone got 150 grand?
