I am in a process to buy. I need a camera that can focus better (for fast action) than my 5D and 5D II. Am I on right track? Also are there any issues with IIn that I have to look into? Thanks

I have an N and it focuses faster than my 5D2, at least in servo. Plus you can actually use the off-center AF points with a MK2N and get good results.

So yes, you are on the right track looking at a 1DMK2 series .. there are no issues that I'm aware of except the slight pain in your facial muscles from smiling after you review a 20 frame burst of a player running towards you and realizing that all are perfectly in-focus :)

Thanks. I seem to remember there was something with Mark II but I haven't heard of anything for II N.

When I was searching for a 1d2n I don't remember reading anything about problems with them. Good luck, I remember being shocked at the performance of the 1D2n when I first got it, it's AF and burst speed are very impressive if you've never used a 1D body before.

No I have never used 1D body before. I jumped from 30D straight to 5D and then 5D Mark II which was a great jump actually IQ wise. Thanks

Madhu,

I had a 1dsmkII and sold it because I found in single shot mode that the center point in low light did NOT acquire as fast as the 5D. Again, this was noticable only in very low light. I have a 1dmkIII now. If you like, take a ride up to Boyds and you can play with it in my driveway with your lenses. PM me if interested.

and why the heck do you have three 70 (80)--200 zooms???

Thanks so much Eric. Most likely low light isn't going to be an issue for me. And thanks for the offer to come over. I am kind of stuck with my damn work this weekend :( Oh I need to update my signature. I recently sold 70-200mm f2.8 after I bought 80-200mm f2.8 in $75 :) And my wife has 70-200mm f2.8 IS and we keep 70-200mm f4 IS in case we want to go light and this is probably the best we have among these. As I spent a part of the money on all that...:)

My 1D IIn does seem to have more trouble in low light than the 40D it replaced, but I definitely find I get more accurate AF than my 5D. If I really, really need to nail the focus, even on still subjects, I get better results with the 1D.

On moving subjects, there is no contest. 1D all the way.

I went from a 20D and 30D to a MKIIn. the II is a revelation (even still after owning it for 2,5yrs). I kept the 20 sold the 30 and used the 20 as a second body. Problem was like the 30, the 20 was just too slow compared to the II (I shoot motorsport). So having the 20D created one problem. I was pulling lenses off the 20 and swapping to the IIn all the time. This resulted in me buying a MKIV last Saturday (oops ;) ) . My intention is to use both the IIn and the IV as nearly 3 yrs on the IIn is still an amazing bit of kit.

The only minor issue with the 1D2 (had to do with image playback when doing H drive shooting) has long been fixed with a firmware update.

The 1D2/1D2N has been one of Canon's most reliable bodies and a workhorse.

I use mine a lot in low light and AF works great. You are definitely on the right track.
