Sure,

1) I had my 580EXII to 2nd curtain, Manual, and adjusted the power output to something like 1/8 or 1/16. (For shots like these, you can also accomplish pretty much the same effect with the first curtain, as well, except to me it's lot easier to do the job with the second curtain.)

2) I then set how long for the shutter to be opened, enough time to do the job. For the first and second images which take a bit longer, I set it to 30 seconds. For the last one with a simple smiley, you'd just need something like 10 seconds or 20 if you don't want to feel rushed. So the shutter speed is pretty much determined by how long you want to take the time to do the job. Also, you'd want the background to be as dark as possible, so watch for your aperture.

3) Make sure to turn on and off the flash light as you see fit while doing the job, otherwise it can get messy -- unless you want to do that intentionally for certain effects.

4) Lastly, some minor post-processing, which I always do no matter what, shooting RAW.
