Nice shots, particularly #2. I'll be happy when they're back in my gardens soon.

I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.

Concentrate on equipment and you'll take technically good photographs. Concentrate on seeing the light's magic colours and your images will stir the soul. - Jack Dykinga

I have no experience with extension tubes. I will pair my 600mm and 1.4 extender with my 5DM2 for the migration of the Painted Buntings coming around the 14th of this month. Do you think that I may benefit from trying extension tubes with the full frame sensor? As I said I have never used an extension tube on any lens. Let me add I will be shooting at from 30-60 feet, mostly 30-40 unless I get lucky with my returning birds ( Banding teams come and band some of mine each year) so my returns are usually more comfortable with me being at closer distances.

With a 600mm prime, you might be able to use a 20mm tube on the full frame. It will act very much like a 1.4x, magnifying the image, without sucking up any light, and you will retain AF. The down side with tubes is, you will lose maximum focus. It won't focus out to infinity anymore, but will focus closer, which can be a plus at times. You can also put a tube on the camera, then the 1.4x then the lens and it will still work. Experiment. I have never used tubes on a FF body or with such a long lens, but have with a 1.3x crop and a 400mm and 500mm Bigma to good effect.

Like Mitch said, you lose distance focus when using tubes. If you're shooting buntings at 30-40 feet tubes aren't going to help you. They only allow you to focus closer but at the expense of distance focusing.

Thanks for the good info. That makes things much clearer about tubes.
