I have PSE7 if that helps. It opened in ACR 5.6 as well as in the organizer.

Problem is that I can't see the thumbnails in Organizer and is therefore unable to open ACR as well. It's those thumbnails I'd like to see.

I can open your imagine just fine in PSE8 on both my Win7x86 and Win7x64 machines. The bottom line is that you do not have Camera Raw 5.6 properly installed in ALL the places it needs to be. Using the Adobe installer does not install the Camera Raw plug in in PSE8; it must be done manually.

Do a search of your machine for all the Camera Raw.8bi files. Replace them all with the current 5.6 version and Elements will work just fine.

Thanks!

Later: I have now installet ACR 5.6 in PE8 and the files opens up as they should, but I have still problems imporitng mkIV files to the Organizer (no thumbnails and the error message says that the files are either damaged or not supported). Any views on how to get around this. I did discover that while ACR 5.6 opened up using Bridge CS4, ACR 5.5 opened up while using PE8 Organizer BEFORE i manually installed Camera Raw .8bi in the right directory.
So now the questions is: How to get the thumbnails visible in PE8 Organizer if you i.e import them the regular way?

Thanks a lot for help so far!

Your thumbnail database may be corrupted. Try rebuilding it. In the Organizer select edit then select all. Once all the files have been selected, this can take some time with a large catalog, select edit, then update thumbnail. Then go do something else as this will take quite awhile. Good luck!

That didn't work, think Adobe gets a support call tomorrow!

This is what I want to see also in PE8. Can open Rawfiles in Editor, but not see the thumbnails in Organizer, my picture index files aren't corrupt either as far as I can check Hmmmmm!

Here's the fix after talking with Adobe customer support:

Organizer is a separate program along Editor in Photoshop Elements 8 the file Camera Raw.8bi must be installed manually in both programs (Editor and Organizer) to enable proper import. Install Camera Raw in the directory:...Plugins ->Organizer Only ->File Formats under Adobe in the Program directory.:)

So how is that any different from what you were repeatedly told earlier in this thread?

See davidcrebelxt's comment in post #5 for example:

A very common problem for ACR updates in Elements is NOT following those instructions closely enough.

(NOTE... Even if you have ACR 5.6 installed for CS4, Elements keeps that same plugin in a different location... you bascially need to install it for each version of photoshop.)

If you had followed the Manual Installation instructions for Photoshop Elements users in the Camera Raw ReadMe file your issues would have been solved days ago.

#5 is too general an explanation. The clue is to install Camera Raw.8bi under both PlugIn-directories in PE8. Adobe Support acknowledged that their written instructions were not clear on this point. PE8 are really two separate programs with separate directories for PlugIns. The Raw-file must be installed in both places to work properly. I didn't understand that before after discussing with a customer-rep. from Adobe, who didn't think of it himself either to begin with. He went on talking about upgrading to ACR 5.7 (release candidate) and so on. Then we discussed if the issue really was ACR or linked to Organizer. Then he said that Organizer had it's own PlugIn directory just as Editor under PE8. Then I suggested that I also installed the file there. That worked!

Interesting! I have both Windows7 x86 and Windows 7 64 bit computers. Both have only one location for the ACR plug in for Elements. The location in the Windows 7 x86 version is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats\ and for the Windows 7 64 bit version it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats\. The ACR plugin for CS4 is in a separate folder. The 64 bit machine has two distinctly different versions of ACR for CS4 in two different directories.

I have a 64-bit machine myself, and ACR installed itself without problems with CS4, could see thumbnails, edit and everything. PE8 was a different matter. Good to know. Now I am just happy I can still use the Organizer because I prefer it to Bridge when it comes to catalogueing pictures. Spent a week at easter organizing my diseased mothers old photos using PE8 (after scanning), so you can see I wasn't happy about giving it up. I plan to organize the rest of my pics the same way.

Interesting, and glad you worked it out then told us what worked.

Appears that Adobe changed their folder sturctures (they didn't USED to have a sepearate plugin folder just for organizer, and not even sure WHY they would do so, quite honestly... makes no sense.) But primarily, they did not update their documentation online.

They really need to get their game together, however. Why you still can't hit an upgrade ACR button from inside Elements and just have it do the job is beyond me. The program knows where it itself is installed, and what versions are compatibile... it would be in the best position to place the plugin in the correct places... it doesn't take a genius programmer to do this.

I called back to Adobe support and THEY asked me how I had solved the problem. I told them and they wrote into their knwledge base. At least I would like ACR for different versions of Photoshop to install themselves properly. Moving files manually is a bit tideous.
