70-200 L destroyed :(

So I had a couples photoshoot this weekend that went horribly wrong. I had my camera set up on my tripod with the couple sitting in front of me. I walked over to adjust my flash power, and as i turn around i see my tripod falling over with my 40D and 70-200 L, I was to far away to catch it.

I walk over and pick it up the 70-200 is laying next to the cam broken, apparently the lens broke at the mount, so the metal screw mount piece was still in the camera. The lens was still attached to the mount via the wires. So unscrewed the mount piece from the camera.

The results, the camera seems to be in fine working order save for a small scuff mark, i thought for sure it would be dead. As for the lens the pressure applied from the weight of the lens hanging from the wires forced one of the wires to break, that is all i can tell that is broken. The mount screws right back into the lens like nothing is wrong i thought for sure all of the screw holes would be stripped but they are not.

Because one of the wires is now disconnected my camera cannot recognize the lens so i can not tell if anything else i wrong with it. Does anyone now how much canon usually charges for lens repair, any ball park pricing? Looks like I will have to send it off to them.

As for why my cam fell, it appears that one of the screws that tightens the clamps on one of the tripod legs was loose, forcing the leg to collapse under load.

I am so mad right now, this may not seem like a big to deal to some but this was my first L lens and being a college student does not allow me to spend much money I just hope the repair cost are not insane.

canon can fix it, probably for under $200.

Call canon and ask. I think their answer will be to ask you to send it in and they will give you a quote before they do the repair. If you decline they will send it back to you.

Wow, that's awful. Canon can tend to charge a good price for lens repairs. I am pretty sure that it is upward of $150, but I could be wrong. For the best idea, send it in to them for an estimate. If you accept, they will go through with repairs.

Sounds like the lens broke at one of the built-in break points it was supposed to. I'm not sure how much it would cost (I've seen other members on here throw figures from $200-$500 depending on how much damage there was) but the best thing to do is to call Canon up and send it in to see what they say.

Do you have your gear insured?

Figure on 3-4 hundred easily. I did a drop test with my 70-200 a while ago and it failed, afterwards it would not focus properly (or at all). It ran 300 to get it repaired, plus shipping and insurance. When you call Canon they will give you an over the phone estimate, but that's pretty unreliable since they are not looking at the actual damaged lens, but it gets you a number to track the lens with when you send it in.

It could be less of course if you were a CPS member. if nothing else being a member gets your repairs back to you much quicker. Here's a link that will get you to the CPS application.

Sorry that happened. Watch the repair costs, if it's the 70-200 in your sig I've seen good ones go as low as $500 lately.

Unfortunately, I don't think he would qualify to be a CPS member based on their requirements last time I checked.

Sounds like it did what it was designed for. As bad as it seems, it was designed to break off at the mount to prevent further damage to the lens itself.

But as a college student myself, I understand where you're coming from. Sorry!

yes that really sucks. May be get some sort of estimate from Canon and if the repair is more than $250-$300 you may as well buy a used one in excellent condition for about $500.
