Hey guys i am really considering getting a new camera during the summer and need your advice as to what to get.

I usually just stroll around exploring for new places to shoot, usually around lakes and such. I also shoot for my college newspaper so sports are a pretty common thing.

The 20d is great but its pretty dated lol. I dont want to spend too much so the newest 1d is out. Im mainly considering a 50d, 7d, 5d classic, or possibly an older 1d series camera.

Any suggestions as to what i should get? Because i shoot sports(and have at least 3 more years of constantly shooting them fps is pretty important...just making that relatively clear

-Jeff

Canon EOS 7D is pretty good for pro level sport shooting, but you need a good lens. As for my experience: Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 is the best for indoor and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L for outdoor and indoor sport shooting. Why Not the IS version of 70-200mm? Because the Non-IS version is sharper than the IS version and when IS on, the focus speed is much slower for fast moving subjects. That is why I always turn IS off when shooting sport.

You might see FAST LENS in many place. Fast lens means large aperture lens ( small f number lens ).

Sports: 7D or 1D3.

The 7D is a pretty huge improvement over the 50D. The 1D3 would be ideal, if you can afford it. The 7D will do a great job if you can't.

The 7D is a really great camera at a really great price, I'd recommend that!

Perhaps it would help if you told us WHY the 20D no longer serves its' purpose? Yes, there are newer cameras, but (believe it or not) this does not make the older cameras work less well than they did before. What exactly do you need in a new camera that is not present in the one you currently have? The answer to that question will likely indicate which newer model you should buy (if any). Simple.

Good luck!

i have the feeling that new lenses would serve you better looking at what you own.

For the price of a 7d you could get yourself some decent glass that would have a large effect on IQ and focus speed.

there's quite a price difference in the 50d and the 7d. the 7 takes 8fps while the 50d is about 6.3fps. i've seen a lot of shots of college sports taken with a 40d (6.3fps) and they've come out very nice both indoor and outdoor. as with most things, this depends on your budget.

I'm still using my 20D. It is very nice to use. Yes, it is an old model and it's 8MP. It has big different, but not that much different compare to a 18MP camera in the calculating in surface.
