Studying 24mm

Hi guys,

I have a (first) wedding coming up in a few months and I plan on using my 50L and 24L the most. I feel comfortable with the first lens, but the 24mm needs some more practice. Therefore I used it almost exclusively throughout the weekend.

Could you please give some feedback on the pictures I took last weekend, keeping in mind the wedding angle?

Thanks a lot!

My primary concern when using wide angle lenses is to make sure to keep the camera level - otherwise the verticals converge. You seem to be consistently careful to keep the camera level - so, that will not be a problem.

The secondary concern with wide angle lenses is making sure that people who are way off center in the frame do not look too fat. These lenses tend to make people wider when they are near the frame edges. Your 24 mm does not seem to distort in that way - so, I wouldn't worry about that problem.

Last, but not least, you do not seem to be using flash. Good! Let's hope that you continue to do well using ambient light (I abhor flash).

Take a second look at the top of the girl's head in the first one. Is that not a noteworthy bulge heading up into the corner of the frame?

To the OP, be very careful about bridal party shots with the folks on the ends.

I'll be honest I think your B/W is more powerful than the color however the color images definitely tell a story here. I may be biased in believing that your B/W is closer to your soul than the color is.

I hadn't noticed it before, but now that you point it out, I'm still not sure. Could we assume that she simply has a surfeit of hair in that direction?

I don't tend to use flash at all. For the type of shots I do, the grain of high ISOs doesn't bother me at all. Most times, I'll add it even.

That is indeed a bulge, not the normal shape of her head. I do think I can get rid of it in PP though. Bot avoiding it beats fixing it of course.

Hi Joe! I must say I prefer B&W myself too. Yet a full wedding in B&W is not what most people want. I am working on my color pictures and I feel that there is an improvement. B&W just comes more natural to me, I guess.
