I did my first "real" shoot with a female client/friend (I shot her wedding two years ago) who has model aspirations. The shoot was about 2.5 hrs. with around 315 frames and I charged her $150, which included three 5x7s. She was in need of 3 shots, head, full body and a swimsuit to take to an audition/casting call for America's Next Top Model. She told me everything went great and the reps that were hosting the event gave her favorable comments on the photos.

The model has asked to have a portfolio put together and wanted a price. My questions are these:

  1. How many images make an average portfolio? & what sizes?...all 8x10s?
  2. She wanted to know if she could have images on a CD, and if so how many?
  3. She wants to know how much $$ for the portfolio prints and/or CD...or should I just print her 10-15 8x10's and put 5-10 images on a CD and say we're even??
Any advice would be appreciated by those with experience with this aspect of the business.

DC~

I don't want to look at more than 6-12 of her best work. Around Detroit, most have books for 11X14" prints. If/when they have new shots, or a tear sheet of published work she's in, then it's time to make the rounds with them. New work = another opportunity to remind them/us that you're still alive & in the biz.

Images sized for her website? Yes.
If you sell a Cd of images to a non-pro who will make green, underexposed, crappy prints at the corner drugstore, not only will you lose the sales of those prints, but those will be your green crappy prints that will be shown to their friends & your potential future clients? ;)

If/when I rarely give printable files to someone, I make sure that they are told where to take them for printing & told where not to take them, too. I give them a release for printing that states where permission to print is valid, which doesn't include places like Walgreens.

It's up to you both to decide, depending on how much of a "friend" she is?
Plus, where are you? New York? Podunk? It makes a difference.
