Does Canon charge a shipping/handling fee to return a lens if I choose not to have the work done?

Does CPS membership influence this?

I don't remember paying one with my camera a couple years ago.

I do not understand why you expect to NOT pay shipping

They didn't charge me.

I sent my 50D in right before the warranty was over to have a final cleaning and general tune-up. There was nothing wrong with it, it worked fine. I just thought that perhaps it could be optimized. Anyway they, wanted to charge me $180 for that service which was more than it was worth to me so I declined. They sent it right back to me.

I guess they figure if you paid to ship it to them, they can pay to ship it back. YMMV.

In Scotland (and the rest of the UK) you normally pay a flat rate for a quote for the repairs. If you don't wish to procede this flat rate usually about £25 covers the return of the broken/damaged camera or lens to the shop for collection

Most Canons currently - 1D(Mks 2&3&4), 7D gripped 50D gripped x2, 40Dgripped x2, 30Dgripped, 20D gripped, 350 gripped, 300. with L lenses

Where did I say I expect NOT to pay?
You are incorrect in your assumption, buddy.
