I don't know if you were told how things were going to be, but even for friends, I don't let things get out of hand. It's no fun if people are out of hand. I doubt anyone was really paying attention to your needs there. This is when being assertive and asking for some cooperation is key. If they don't listen, then just excuse yourself and gather your stuff and put everything in the car. Then get your camera with one lens and a flash and go do candids and nothing else. It's not worth ruining a friendship or your gear or feeling like you have to kick your cute dog. Things get out of hand, it's true. But as the pro, you set the standards for what you do. I know I'm shooting a wedding in a month where half the party will already be drunk before the ceremony. I told the B&G that when people start acting stupid, there is no use for me to record that. I leave. The groom promised he'd behave himself. I told him he better. If any of his buddies ruin the day for the bride, he'll have to deal with it forever. No pictures of the event from me. I think he understood and he's a family friend. I know there will be no next time for you here, but in case you come across another situation where the subjects are running around like crazy people, just smile, pack up and start leaving. I'm sure someone will notice and they will either say they will honor your requests for good behavior, or you leave. It's what is the right thing to expect.

Did a shoot for a dear friends Childs first birthday party, big family get together.

<SNIP>

And now you know why I prefer to shoot aircraft.

At least if something goes wrong, it will kill me quickly instead of a long, slow, painful way like this experience.

Holy Moo! :shock:

Sorry - these screens get smaller when you get older... ;)

Well then, the OP went with Pro equipment and didn't charge a dime - what's so surprising about all this?

Are you suggesting that the kids ruined the equipment because the OP was doing this as a favor to a friend?

I don't follow the 'what's so surprising about this'? part. I would not let my kids play on somebody's lights and backdrops and I would expect other parents to do the same.

TBH I think it is to be expected where there are young children in the vicinity, things will be damaged unless there is very good supervision.

Do your friends know how much the gear cost? I doubt it, hence they have no interest in protecting it. Had you told them " thats $x,xxx.xx of equipment out there - be careful or I will charge for damage" they might have been more attentive.

I realise why the OP is frustrated but tbh i think it was a disaster waiting to happen.

How would your friend feel if you smear some cake in his house an his car.. no problem just friends.. don't think so ;)
You'll have to draw the line and at least tell them how you think about it!

Good luck fixing your stuff, hope you got insurance?

Doesn't say a whole lot about the parenting skills. Then again, maybe it does...

Simply cross them off your "friends" list, because they aren't.

As for their brats, you can see how they are being raised. Fortunately, you can (and should) avoid them until at least the post-collegiate time frame. Maybe by then they'll have learned a bit of consideration for others. I doubt it, but maybe (miracles can and do occur).

And if they haven't, at least they'll be old enough to sue.
