I carry Seagate Go drives with me. Very small and work great. I would not trust just one though. Get 2 and have multiple copies.

+ 1 on the portable USB external hard drives, we use 2 500gb Transcend Store Jets which have a rugged rubber casing. + a 250gb Netbook (small size, super long battery, good for viewing images and deleting those you don't want, your daughter could use it)

Thanks for the ideas guys. I know that internet connection is slow (dial up) at best where we have it, and non-existant in other locations, so I don't this online backup is an option.

Er, no. Quite possibly the worst suggestion ever.

Get a Hyperdrive (external link) case and install your own laptop harddrive in it.

And, quite probably, the best suggestion. You don't want to be lugging your laptop around on a game drive but there may be a situation where you need to backup in the field. If that happens usb HDDs that attach to the laptop are useless. But a Hyperdrive will allow you to backup anywhere. It's fast and the batteries last a long, long time.

On my last trip to Africa I took a Hyperdrive UDMA and a netbook. At the end of each day I backed up my card(s) to both devices. Just to be sure I also backed up to my friend's hyperdrive and she backed up her cards to mine.

Bring LOTS of CF cards.

For three weeks in Africa I'd be looking at around 4000 shots. That's around 100GB. That's a lot of money to invest in cards - about £650. For that I could buy two Hyperdrive UDMA PSDs and install 320GB drives in each.

Having 2 copies of your photo files on a notebook computer and an external portable drive is a good idea for several reasons. Either drive can fail at any time

And if the notebook drive dies then your external USB drive may as well be dead also. Same as if your card reader dies, or your USB cable gets lost, or your notebook battery gives up the ghost.

Hence the reason for the Hyperdrive - totally independent of the notebook. If one dies the other still works perfectly.
