There is actually a wealth of macro work to be done almost anywhere, at nearly any time. You will find no more zen at the top of a mountain, than the zen that you bring there with you.

If you are near Northbrook, the Botanic Garden is amazing. Worth the yearly membership. Brookfield Zoo for animals. How about Oak Park for some Frank Lloyd Wright homes? There are plenty of great places. I could go on and on, but there are plenty of books for that topic. Canon 5DIII, 7D, 40D, 8-14L, 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS, 24L, 50L, 85 f1.8, 100L, 135L, 1.4 Extender, Tokina 16-28 f2.8, and too many lights and accessories to list.
