Currently I'm using my wife's mac-mini with photo shop cs-3, and Bridge. But now shooting raw on the 5D the process time is forever. Instead of 2-4k for a new Mac does anyone use a HP or other IBM clone?

Do you want to spend your time working with photos, or rather chasing issues with flaky cut-rate components with bizarre compatibility quirks, malware, and myriad third-party tools to look for malware? What about hunting up all the stuff MS can't be bothered to include?

They start at @2k according to Apple's website (if you want the newer processor ones) and $1,700 if you want the older ones.

lol i have a MBP but i dont even use it for photo editing. i only use it on the go for photo stuff when i'm away.

i actually prefer a desktop even though its slower overall than my MBP (since its a lot older). However the HD responsiveness is beautiful...

How's this ... I was first certified by Microsoft as an MCSE in Win NT4, then in Win2K. As required by my career path I was also certified in Novell 3.x/4.x. I worked in Novell before I did Windows. Because of that work I was required to have a network certified notebook. If you don't know what that means, it meant that all the hardware in the notebook was tested and certified to work on WinNT and Win2K. Not only was I a Microsoft 'fanboy' as you called it, I was what I considered a Microsoft Whore.

When I left that industry I no longer had access to the supply chain for the superior Windows network certified notebooks. By the way they cost on average 203 times what the consumers were buying. I went shopping for a new notebook and looked at all the notebooks offered in the consumer outlets for Windows. Needless to say I was sadly disappointed in what was put in my hands.

The sales guy says, wait here a minute I'll be right back. He cam back and put a notebook in my hand that was impressive. It just felt better built than all the others I was shown. I told him I would take one, it was an Apple G4 Powerbook. I was so impressed that the next year when I was due to buy a new notebook, I opted to keep the G4 PB and buy a G5 Power Mac desktop. When I opened up that Power Mac to install more RAM I was blown away with the build quality inside as opposed to say the average windows box. Where did Apple hide all the cables?

If you have never seen the inside of a Power Mac take a look here --- ( where are all the wires for the drives and such? ) http://upload.wikimedia.org …/1a/Power_Mac_G5_open.jpg (external link)

This all took place many years ago. I have since switched out all of the machines here to Mac and I gotta say my life is easier.

Honestly if you had told me that 10 years ago I would have called you crazy, but it was about 6 years ago I think when I made the total switch over to Mac.

I have played on both sides of the fence, and I have to say I am happier sitting under the Apple Tree then I am in the house looking out the Windows!

With all due respect, I think you aren't satisfied with Mac, you are satisfied with newer technology =) Was Windows XP even out 10 years ago? I think you would be pleasantly surprised by Windows these days. But what ever different strokes for different folks.

I really wonder how many of the Mac fanboys and PC fanboys have spend any time actually using the other system?

I have Macbook Pro, Macbook, and I had an iMac. I also have several PCs.

Both systems are fine, but to be completely honest, PCs are just as good in pretty much every regard as Macs are. I find people who are in love with Macs are just use to the way Macs are.

I used PCs for almost 20 years - started out on MS-DOS 3.3, where you booted to a C:\> prompt and had to manually type .exe commands to run programs (unless you used .bat files and/or wrote a menu program). I had some modicum of proficiency in BASIC programming, and faffled around with assembly language a bit. Upgraded hardware in my first PCs, then eventually started building my own from scratch. I'm decently competent at troubleshooting hardware/software in Windows (up to XP). My last two systems were dual boot in XP and Mandrake Linux. When Windows Vista came out, I didn't want to deal with it, and switched to Macs (less than two years ago).

I now have 2 Macbooks and a 20" iMac. I'm far less competent at the OS X command line than I was in DOS/Windows, and nowhere near as up to speed on SW/HW troubleshooting - but haven't had much need for those things either. I've played around on a couple friends' Win7 computers, and don't see anything that gives me even the slightest urge to switch back. So I'm not "in love" with Macs because I'm used to the way they are....in fact, quite the opposite. I like them because (in my experience - YMMV) they're more reliable, less hassle, and easier to use. They're not anywhere near as expandable/upgradeable due to Apple's closed architecture, but I really haven't found myself missing that yet (this coming from a guy who built his own PCs for years). I also immensely like not having to run malware scanners, anti-virus programs, etc.

As to the OP's question - neither my Macbooks or my iMac have any problem processing RAW files from my 50D in DPP, Lightroom or Photoshop Elements. The bottom line is that if you're a PC guy and you're happy with your PC, stick with it. Same goes if you're a Mac guy. Both will get the job done, it's largely a matter of personal preference.

Man, $2k and you don't even get an i7 or a current gen graphics card?

Same with me. After a while working servicing Mac's I moved on. Found them to frustrating to try and get simple admin tasks done (I'm much more of a command line\keyboard shortcut kind of guy) and happily have a trouble free PC network at home.

Sadly with some of the new developments that Apple seems to be taking with developers and the restrictions they seem to be imposing around their platforms, it's extremely doubtful that Mac's will ever find a place in my office environment either.

+1

I have an HP at home that I paid around $1,000 for with upgrades and 22" monitor. Works very well. I just upgraded to Windows 7, 64 bit, and added memory.

At school, I use Macs because schools use Macs.

I like both systems but would have to pay 2 to 3 times as much for a Mac that can do what my HP is capable of.

I'll stick with my PC....at home.

:)

After owning many Macs and PCs and working for Intel for over a decade, I now own only Macs (except for a PC netbook) and recommend them. Macs just have fewer issues. An iMac is probably your best bet.

I have always had PC's but always had a thing for macs. I just love how easy they operate and just about everything about them also. Since my current laptop is slowly dieing on me, today i went and got a power mac G5. I am so excited I cant wait for it to come in and so that I can install CS4 on it.

Out of curiosity... why a Power Mac G5? It is rather old.

Everyone keeps suggesting that you get the 27" iMac. I can tell you that the 21.5 or even an older 24" imac will work just fine.

My 21.5" handles RAW files from a 50D just fine which are larger than that of the 5D so you should not have any issues at all processing 5D files on the iMac.
