It could potentially be a faulty shutter, but do some more test shots at various shutter speeds first. If you were using off camera flash it could be sync speed - but you weren't so it's not.

Will do.

Yeah - that's about how I felt. Lucky for me we were friends and she was understanding. That DID get her some freebie photos though :D.

Yep that looks consistent with either of the above..
I get banding like that when I'm shooting in the studio and the shutter speed is too fast to sync with the lights.. on the 5DII its about 1/200th or lower..
I've not come across it in an outdoor environment though.. and as Tim said it doesnt look like you've used any flash...

If its not the sync speed then it could be a sticky shutter

Misaligned hoods usually go across the corners :)

1 more for shutter sticking, but the hive mind is just guessing- try some test shots. I can't remember when the MkII came out, shouldn't it be on warranty? are they ALL still on warranty?

If it was the shutter sticking (or sync speed issue) wouldn't the darkened portion be along the top or bottom rather than on the short side? Does the 5D Mk II really have a shutter that travels left to right or vice-a-versa?

e-k

You are correct. The shutter blades in all EOS cameras that I am aware of are parallel to the long sides of the frame so that their travel distance is the shortest possible distance.
