Hey guys,
How, if you have, go about getting permission to shoot a football game? Someone told me to contact them and they may give you permission to shoot on the sidelines if you give them the photographs, is this true for some teams? Any other ways? Looking to shoot a few Ohio State games, maybe even the spring game in a few weeks. Thanks.

What's your motive for wanting to shoot it? Do you work for any kind of press organization now?

Contact the Athletic Department and ask.

You're dealing though with one of the biggest (read: Lucrative) NCAA D1 programs on the planet though so be prepared to be dissapointed unless you have a legitimate editorial reason to be there.

Do you really like football and enjoy talking pictures of football games? Then the best thing you can do is to find a small-college game and take pictures there. At a game in one of the lower NCAA divisions, you'll be able to get the same pictures without the hassle of crowded sidelines.

Over and over again, users of this forum ask how they can get sideline passes for a major sporting event. Unfortunately, a cold answer to the question is -- if you have to ask that question, you may not be ready. You may not have the experience of handling the stresses of a major game, from getting a clear shot through a crowd to avoiding collisions with very large and fast players. And if you're offering to give away you're pictures, you're certain not to get any sympathy from the people who try to make a living through sports photography.

This same question has been raised countless times on this forum. Rather than looking at big-time events, do yourself a favor and find some small-time events where you'll be welcome.

Thanks for the replies. The guy I talked to did what I said (shot and gave them the photos) for an NFL team, I forgot which one but he had no hassle. I went to an OSU game earlier in the year, it didn't look too crowded down there and there were just other photogs behind the endzones.

I guess there's never any harm in asking for anything. If you can get a "yes" to it, more power to you I suppose.

The probability of it working is slim, thats all we are saying. Its best to start low and work your way up. I've never seen any NFL team give a pass to just anyone in exchange for a cd of images.

It is going to be damn near impossible to get on the sidelines w/out a media outlet backing. Do you know why Bowling Green plays OSU? Because that one game's proceeds fund nearly the entire BGSU program. I agree about trying to get access to a small college venue and building a portfolio. That might lead to something. D1 schools not only have a team of shooters from the college, they have nearly every media outlet there snapping away, too, and if they don't have someone there, they pay a premium for the usage of the images. They really don't have time for someone who's there "for the fun of it." Trust me, though, I would be the first in line to be there if they did. I've been a Buckeye fan all my life and have 2 alumni in the family. If you do get granted access to the sidelines to shoot, make sure you play the lottery that day, because it's your lucky day.

...and I hope he never shoots an NFL game again, or any high level ball!
