This was my first real attempt at blacking out the background.

I'm not one to be giving much advice but it looks like you need a hair or background light to separate the subject from the background, and since you are wanting to black out the background that would mean a hair light.

I agree - rim light would work well for seperation..

I did have a hair light with a snoot but the ratios are not right so it is as if it was not even there. You can kind of see it in the first pic but it is lost in the second two.

I'm still not happy with the shadows. It is really apparent in the first one off the nose.

Second one looks best imho. And like most say, the hair is lost in the black background but I don't have the expertise to tell you what you should do to solve the problem :p

the jacket in the 3rd seems to blend in with the back as well.. could use some lights for separation.

ive had good luck with 2 lights on both sides plus one behind the subject on a really low setting.

you could then dodge/burn in PS to get it where you want it
