Abbie, back to your Sound of Music shots -- those are nicely done! You handled the lighting in there very well -- congrats!

Thanks, Tony :)

I have a pair. 2 for $30 you cant beat em. I like using them with my alien bees on outdoors shoots. They catch less wind than a regular umbrella and if they get damaged or dirty its not a big loss.

These were taken using one.

yup,,,i cuncur. great job. a lot of people dont use tv mode. Big mistake. you know that a sutter speed of 1/500-800 is going to feeeze motion. the ambiant constantly changes in a church...tv works great. good choice. i use TV and AV all the time when im not using a speedlight.

i don't know.. i shoot plenty of weddings and music venues on stages and i don't think i've ever been able to manage 1/500-800 before, there's never that much light in my experience. i usually shoot M because the lighting doesn't change drastically enough across a stage to merit anything more than slight shutter speed tweaks occasionally. i would still recommend Av over Tv for performances because set wide open, you will be getting the fastest shutter speed with proper exposure anyways. the only way to get any faster would be to intentionally underexpose to trade for speed, in which an EC change would be the same across either semi-auto mode.

Tv is useful, but not for indoor events in my opinion. if Av isn't getting enough shutter speed, M is really the only way to exercise full control over it. (plus, M removes the possibility of your spot meter catching a bit of the background and causing your camera to try and wildly overcompensate and use extremely inappropriate exposure settings.)

Interesting... Yes, I will admit that most of the shots seemed to be anywhere between 1/200 and 1/500, and the apertures were f/2-f/5.6, generally. That's what I noticed as I looked through them. The light changed more than I thought it would --- but fortunately, the scenes with v. low light ("spotlighted" only) had only one or two people on stage, so f/2 was fine since I was probably just taking a shot of one person anyway, not the entire von Trapp clan ;)

For example, I think this one was at f/5.6 --- lots of folks on stage, lots of lights on, and it looks generally okay, I think, as far as focus. I focused on Maria in almost all my shots (she's my friend; I was shooting mostly for her):

AHHHHH! So glad I popped in here! Jon, she is soooooo amazing! Congrats! :) :) How's mommy doing?

Mommy is doing amazingly well. Trying to get as much rest as possible.

I forgot how little babies can be. I also forgot how amazing they can be. Just sitting there watched her facial expressions is a hoot! I wonder what she is thinking.....I know....Thank god my father has a 5D....;)

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes...and just remember to remind me when you get tired of seeing Addy photos...;)

Here a shot from a function I shot earlier tonight and jsut one reason I still love the 5D and this time paired with a 200 2L at 3200 ISO f/2 and check this 1/40 of a sec. The room was VERY DARK.

There is lots of story.....basically....we survived our dad basically abandoning us and our crappy step dads. Dad left Sis and her mom for my mom. Dad and my mom got divorced because he beat the crap out of there. Basically, a hefty amount of pain. We did this as kind of a bonding thing. This was the first I'd met her.

Well it is crap like this that makes us the people we are today...and unless you are one big con artist...I would say you turned out pretty darn nice....

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger....or something like that. Sometimes it just pisses us off more....;)

Very nice. Glad things are working out. You're a saint to take her in like that. :)

Bet she never had images like that taken of her before.
