Hey Allen! How about this one? Shot this two days ago while up in Big Bear California. I know it still has the horizon but the ground i was shooting at had trash all over the place (LOL :o)

airfrogusmc wrote in post #10566689 (external link)
My question back to you is what was the motivation to shoot this? What are you trying to communicate? What are the important elements? A much wiser man than I am and one incredible photographer once taught me and I quote, "either everything in the frame is helping your visual statement or hurting it." Theres never anything just there.

That would include making sure that your subject is placed somewhere in the frame that everything in the frame is supporting the placement.

But what are you trying to say and why did you make the photograph? Is everything in the image supporting that? Remember basic elements of visual language like line, form, shape, color, and things like vanishing point and therefore placement of the horizon all become important elements in trying to communicate your vision.

I would say in this case the sky and the boat are key so maybe to much foreground in this case.

Not to be nitpicky, cause this is better that my landscapes I have taken, but listening to Allen and taking his advice, covering the bottom 1/4-1/3 really adds more of an impact to the sky. I would have probably tried getting in the foreground as you did, but looking at what Allen has pointed out I can see where the difference really changes the photo, and takes it from being good to really changing the image into one with more "oomph".

Either way, great shot!

Hey Jay, give a call if you're comin' through Chicago or maybe on the way back;)

airfrogusmc wrote in post #10567301 (external link)
Yeah ditto.

It would be great to meet you guys but I'm afraid the closest I'll come to Chicago would be maybe Madison, WI while on my return trip to AZ. :(

First outting with my 5d and FAILED by shooting everything in ISO1600 (from shooting at home)... I was wondering why my shutter speed were insanely high... Realize there is no iso indicator on the lcd or vf... Lesson learned.

Funny thing, when I first got my 5D that bothered me very much. I couldn't believe I had to press a button to see ISO, or look at the top LCD. It just seemed like such a basic feature having owned an XSi prior.

After shooting it for a year and a half, it's something I don't miss one bit. Now I always know exactly what ISO I'm shooting. Coming from film, you always knew what ISO you had loaded, so I guess it's an offshoot of that practice.

Allen, this could be an optical "delusion" but her face looks a little soft. Am I seeing things?
