Is this a requirement? Guess I'd better get busy then...

Just that trying to sell something you've been bashing in other threads isn't really a recipe for a successful sale. :)

Tony, is there truth to the rumour that you've got a 1D4 now?

I was thinking either the 24-70 or the 24-105. I used the 24-105 briefly a couple of days ago. Seemed like a good lens to have as an everyday walkaround type lens. Set it to 50mm and it seemed to produce identical images to my 50mm prime at f/4... sharpness, colour, contrast seemed pretty much identica which is impressive considering it's a zoom lens.

Would it be worth spending a bit extra on the 24-70? I heard the colours are a bit punchier, and the extra stop might be useful for some shallow DOF. Or should I just abandon the zooms altogether and get a prime? I don't have the money for a 35L unless I either sell another lens or save up until next year.

I had a 24-105 for a while and sold it to get the 24-70. Tony has both and uses them in different circumstances.

It's all about preferences....

Yeah, it's true I have both -- I bought the 24-70 a long time ago to use with my 30D, and then when the 5DC started selling as a kit with the 24-105 I snatched them up, and haven't felt like selling either (I'm not much of a gear seller, TBH).

They are both nice in different ways. The 24-105 is actually a very nice walk-around lens for the 5D and I use it without hesitation. It's light and compact, a really good fit for this camera. The reach and the IS come in handy and the f/4 is actually quite a nice aperture for a reasonably narrow depth-of-field type of shot.

The 24-70 I tend to use for, well, maybe an irrational desire to just use a very nice lens:)! I use it a lot with my flash, with my 1D3, for close-up semi-macro stuff. It is of course a heavier lens than the 24-105 and it's partly how much you would prefer the lighter compared to the heavier. Like I said, it's a good balance with the 1D3, not to say it's unbalanced with the 5D, though.

As far as image quality? Honestly, I don't know, but the large elements of the 24-70 with the f/2.8 aperture could lend weight to the argument that letting in all that light must lead to some IQ advantage. Plus, I like the "f/2.8 focus advantage" of wider glass and here I think the 24-70 does seem to be a bit more snappy, so if that matters, well, it's worth considering.

But, for basic, working IQ, I just don't have an "aha" moment with the 24-70. Look at the archives for the two lenses and you will see some very awesome images for both.

Try 'em both out!

Heh! I dunno who started that:)! It wasn't Scott, but he's the first one who asked. And I told him "no I haven't drank the koolaid and spring for one of the new-fangled cameras, I'm sticking with the 5DC and the 1D3, and proud of it!!"

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it...

Thanks, Tony. I have a friend who has the 24-70, I'm sure I could persuade her to lend me it for an afternoon to have a test drive :)

Good idea! Some people love the "feel" of the 24-70, but think of carrying it around all day with you on the camera -- if it seems a bit much for that, you might really look at the 24-105. Of course, primes are even lighter, some seem so little on the 5D:)!

Im with tony on this. I miss my 24-105 a lot because its realy a great walk around lends on a 5d. My Aha is at weddings and low light. Thats where the 24-70 shines plus 2.8 on a 24-70 is really really nice. It cant be beat for wedding work, receptions,,it eata up the 24-105 until you factor a flash into the considerations, the the edge goes to the 24-105. I prefer the 24-70 but both are outstanding products.

Very nice, Bob

Do you have a friend in the know? This may be true but us commoners will only find out when it's actually released.

I had a 24-105 for a while and sold it to get the 24-70. Tony has both and uses them in different circumstances.

I'm only following the Canon Rumors for some time on this subject.

I also know someone who has the 24-70 and the 24-105, and you are right: he uses them for different circumstances. But to him photography is what puts the food on his table, it's he's incoming main source, and for me as only an amateur, one of these two lenses will have to fit my needs ;)

Tony and Mike, that's exactly what i'm looking for: "a great walk around lends on a 5d". For everything else, I sure prefer the primes... Oh, my 200mm f2.8 L II is such a nice piece of glass, it was my last gear acquisition and I'm really loving that lens ;)

Well, to me the 24-105 fits the walk-around bill with a T. There was just something "right" when they released this lens as a 5DC "kit" lens. And, to me, it's kind of fun to have a lightweight kit. Now, I kind of chuckle when I "hear" myself say that about the 5D and an L lens, since the xxD and certainly the Rebel bodies are all smaller than the 5D, but still...

The 24-70 is to me more like a "workhorse" -- kind of like how I use the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I love it, I enjoy using it, but often it doesn't make it on my camera. But when a shoot can benefit from it, boy it tends to stay stuck on the body. And, like I said above, the 24-70 as well as the 70-200 spend a lot of time on my 1D3, my camera workhorse.

Nah I guess not...
