Can buy a 1.8 85mm for a nice price.. on full frame I like that more than my nifty fifty. But is the quality of pictures the same or is the 85 better?

I love my 85 1.8.....WAY better than the nifty. Get it! You won't regret it!

I've should listen you..you were right waaaayyy too much crap on the 5D MKII that I don't really need or use...the manual is making my head spiiiiiiinnnnnnn like craaaaaazzzyyy

aside from the top buttons being confusingly rearranged, and slight variations with the rear buttons, i found the mk2 to function really similarly to the original. the muscle memory of pressing certain spots threw me off at first, but you get used to it after your first day or two of shooting with it. what's making your head spin? :p

@airfrogusmc:
Either one of them can take my pulse anytime.:lol::rolleyes:;)

@thePupD:
I do not want to start the 85 1.8 vs 100 2.0 war. They are both great lenses. But don't fail to look at the 100 as well if you are thinking about the 85. It gets down to which f.l. you need.

Well, This is subjective. All else being equal (both lenses being good copies) they are both just tools in the arsenal of one of the greatest photographic systems around. Each focal length has a different use.
IMO, The 50 makes a great walk around lens for general purpose. OTOH, the 85 is a very good portrait lens, especially on a FF camera.
The main ingredient in deciding which is better, is "you" the Photographer. ;)

Re: the nifty/85 1.8 question....

I have both. I have found that for me using the 50 vs 85 I get sharper pictures and more close to my usual with the 85 than the 50. The 85 just feels better to me when using it. The 50 is plenty fine but I like my eyes sharpity sharp sharp sharp and I tend to get better results with the 85. Even better with the 135 but that's neither here nor there. :lol:

I've gone through 2 copies of the 50 1.8, the last one I compared the sharpness and overall look to my 85, and the 85 blew it out of the water. It was like comparing a kit lens to an L. Perhaps that nifty needed a bit of a calibration, but the AF is so terribly slow on those things anyways I just had to sell it. Now that I've gone FF with the 5D I want to find a Sigma 50mm, but the 85 is a superb lens for portraits and anything and worth every penny!
