I just saw a new quick release adapter for the S90 on Lensmate (external link). It looks quite appealing to me. I have not purchased an S90, yet, but this may be helpful in deciding.

Has anyone out there purchased one, and if so, what do you think of it vs the original adapter? I know there is a tripod mount adapter from another source, but that seems rather clunky to carry around. This quick release system seems more convenient and portable.

thanks,
Dennis

Looks interesting. So is this adapter for holding filters, lens attachements (like macro/telephoto)?

What would you attach to the lens besides filters?

Thank you. bw!

This is just for filters. It's an update to the earlier filter adapter that had to screw on and was usually left on by folks I've seen using it online.

You are not encouraged to add tele or wide converters directly to the lens. I believe you would have to use the tripod mounted adapter so the extra weight does not damage the lens mechanism.

Here is the link to Lensmate (external link) for types of filters they sell to use with the adapter. I found 37mm available on BHPhotovideo (external link) for a close up lens.

I don't have an S90, but I'm seriously considering it. So I'm checking out options.

This coming weekend I'm probably going to have a crack at making my own holder using the tripod mount.

Firstly I don't like the idea of weight on the lens, even if it is a small amount, and secondly I already have a few little add-on bits (i.e. teleconverter) that would put way too much weight on it. Thirdly I already have an old filter adapter from another old camera that I'll be utilising to make the process much easier.

I still cannot believe Canon didn't provide a facility for filters on this camera. IMO it's the biggest let down and otherwise I feel it's an almost perfect P&S for my needs.

I don't really understand filters, especially pertaining to point and shoots. Where on POTN is a good spot to learn about filters and what they do?

Thank you. bw!

Well I'm sure you could google for a pretty thorough guide, but I'll give you the quickest run down of the mains ones I'd like to be able to use:

- Polarising filter, light waves are oriented differently typically due to reflections and a polarising filter will only let certain light waves through due to this, and can often remove reflections from things like water, glass, or even particles in the atmosphere. You cannot do this in software.
- ND filter, just darkens everything and allows longer exposure times for when you want extreme motion blur.
- ND grad, darkens one part of the image (i.e. sky) and not the rest (i.e. land)

Here's more info on filters;

http://www.tutorial9.net …/filters-and-photography/ (external link)

Note: near the bottom of the article he talks about close up lenses, and suggest you use an extension tube instead. You cannot use an extension tube on a Point and Shoot camera. DSLRs can use extension tubes.
