Interesting article - so am I to understand that the MKII was used to "film" the episode that is actually broadcast over the air? I know it has some great capabilities, but it is still not a video camera in the sense of high end dedicated production video device. No slam on the machine - I love my old Classic - but I was just a little surprised to read that.

It's been used by the crews of SNL and "24" as well...certainly capable in the right hands and with the right workflow.

Actually the thing is that both the 5DII and the 7D blow away more or less any video camera on the market today. It competes with digital film cameras where only few can compare in terms of image quality and they cost at least 10 times more and are much larger and heavier. There is no other camera that approaches the DSLR:s in terms of low light capability. The 5DII has the largest sensor of any video camera and the 7D has the sensor size very close to the classical Super-35mm format (and is larger than anything else on the market except for the 5DII).

The video capabilities of DSLRs are a major revolution and the list of film industry professionals using them is long, including George Lucas, Robert Rodriguez and Ron Howard.

The shortcomings of the cameras for video (aliasing, rolling shutter, no XLR inputs, color compression etc) can be for the most part worked around and the massive size of the sensors (high IQ, shallow DOF, low light capabilities) combined with availability of good glass (and very very cheap compared to for instance Panavision lenses) makes it very interesting for professional production.

Why do you say that?

I think this is really nifty from a DSLR-user's standpoint, but I already find that House sometimes has too LITTLE DoF to begin with (when two people are talking back and forth, at least the person talking at the moment should be in focus). So we'll see how this turns out.

Amazing - I had no idea it's use had become this extensive; knew it was a fine little machine but hadn't appreciated how far people were pushing its capabilities.

Well, I guess call it ignorance and lack of understanding on my part.;) I stand corrected.

me too! all the camera people will be admiring the 5d IIs ability. I'm sure there are still naysayers that their dslr doesn't "do" professional video, but lets see how this works out.

Pretty cool indeed. I ordered a 5D Mark II earlier today. I had no intention of using the HD video at all, but now... perhaps I need to find a reason. Must be a pretty capable video capturing device.

Yea but the 5dII cant shoot in 1080p at 120 FPS. Cant it LOL? Don't they shoot movies and HD t.v like that or they do it at 60FPS?
