This is not another 7d vs 5d thread, this is 7d vs 5dmkii vs 5d mki for wedding photography. I can't decide which one to get need some help. I want to be learn wedding photography which one fit my needs more? 5D is only 12 MP, 5Dmkii is around $2000 used $_$....and 7D is I don't know how is it? Or should I wait for the 60D? I'm kinda in a dilemma because my skills are still beginner level and I don't want to waste the functions on a 5dmkii or 7D because I wouldn't know how to use it for now...I like the 5D but it's only 12 MP I know MP doesn't matter but the 18 MP on the 7D blows the 5D away from pictures I see on this forum...5D mk ii is good but the price isn't I mean..I can afford it...but do I need it? argh..help me. I'm getting used by the way...

Ive used a 30D and a 40D in weddings. I have a 50D and a 7D which I plan to use in the future. a 5D Mk II or a 7D will work just fine.

if you think you are in a beginner level, worrying about what camera to use to shoot a wedding should be the least of your worries. you should be learning how to shoot effectively and competently to begin with. the LAST thing you need to worry about is what gear to use - its not going to save you or take good pictures for you.

Well... I would personally not shoot a wedding with only one cam... so for the price of a 5D2, you can have two 5D's... :)

I am also interested in these 7D photos that blow 5D photos away. They are both capable cameras and it is really the photographer that makes one photo better than another.

you are right, but as of now I just want one camera to build up my skills on.

You have three lenses, but no camera?

5DII is the most ideal... But a most sensible approach for a wedding photog with no cameras at all would be to take the same money and either buy two 5D classics or two 50Ds.

Do not go out shooting weddings, even freebies and family, without two cameras. That's a good way to get a rep as the photog who didn't deliver as promised because their only camera broke. There are no do-overs with weddings.

They're all very good cameras. If you're still new to photography just get one that you can afford right now. Start shooting and improve on your photography skills. Shooting weddings take quite a bit of skills and practice, it's not a walk in the woods.

I also would think the investment in glass is far more important that the choice in camera bodies. You need fast lenses for weddings.

The 5D II is probably the best choice, but not at the expense of not being able to afford the right lenses.

What do you have now? You must be putting the glass you own on something.

Honestly if you have a body already use THAT for learning. Once you're better than your equipment and know exactly what you need, then upgrade.

I think you are really going at this the wrong way.

You have mentioned that you are a beginner. I think you should just get a camera and learn about photography. Learn to light, learn to shoot in low light. Learn how to shoot people and learn how to process photos. Learn how to deliver services on time and at a cost point that will not break the bank. Learn how to market, learn about LLC's and liability insurance. Learn how to run a business.

Then....you should focus on which equipment would benefit your wedding shooting.

Jon

I just upgraded my 40D for a 7D. I wish i could have gotten a 5D2 but the price was too far out there. Had I not invested in glass for the crop body, my upgrade would have been to a 5D. Even though it is only a 12MP cam, it still produces stellar images. Dont get me wrong, I love the 7D, but at 100% crop i think the 5D still has it. I am still thinking of getting one with a 24-105 as a back up to the 7D.

Can I put my two pennyworth( UK money) in here.
I shot a wedding for a friend of my wife this weekend, it was for free as they had no money and it was experince for me.
My thoughts-never again- I do not have the experince or skills to do it properly under the stress levels involved.
Before you think about which camera is the most suitable go and get lots of practice as a second shooter for a pro wedding tog.
It looks to be an easy way to make money, it is not if you want to do it properly.
I take my hat off to all those POTN,ers who make their living shooting weddings, it requires very high technical skills both with a camera and a computer as well as very good people skills-a licence to print money it ain,t.
BTW I shoot interiors for an estate agent ( Realtor) and thats easy compared with weddings, give me architecture any time it stands still and does not blink when the shutter goes off.

please review your comment about reviewing images at 100%.
in today's world 100% viewing pretty much means nothing.

at a 100% viewing the amount you actually see is different between 7D an 5D.
just print some pictures.

and while we are on shooting weddings .... speed kills -> 24-70mm f2.8 over 24-105mm f4 for weddings. IS is for stationary subject at low light shooting.
the fact that the 24-70mm has been proven as a primary PJ lens says it all.

Just my 2 cents....
