Well I was at the lake and was able to get this. This is my first real bird shot and I have no idea what type of bird this is. Any info and feedback would be great. Thanks

Sometimes the image may not allow for this but it's something to keep in mind when composing your shots. Dangit, I was gonna say the same thing Nighthound but didn't want to take away from an already top notch capture. Some lead-in to the beak would be awesome. Some cropping thoughts: For birds in flight or on the move it's best to crop so they have space in the frame in front of them, about equal to the space that's behind the Great Blue Heron in your shot. The same applies to your second shot, an off-center subject (moved left left) would add a bit more interest IMO. This is the age-old rule of thirds, which I admit that I don't adhere to 100% of the time. Sometimes the image may not allow for this but it's something to keep in mind when composing your shots. I see, thank you. kinda wanted the bird in the first photo to hit the first (top left) quadrent of the rule of thirds.....Thanks Canon 5D Mark II (x2), 30D, 40D, G10, 70-200 F4 IS (x2), 16-35 f2.8 L, 50mm 1.4, 430 EX II (x2), 580 EX II Tamron 28-75 F2.8 (x2), Tonkia 12-24 F4, 10-18 Fisheye, Full studio with some light
