So I am going to be switching from Nikon to Canon soon(40D...gripped soon after) and have decided that I should probably upgrade my bag to give my baby a nice home.

The thing is however, I would like to be able to carry it with me to college, so that eliminates a backpack. And I dont really want it to look like a camera bag...but rather more like a messenger bag.

Do these exist?

Ive seen the Crumpler million dollar bags, but i was looking for something a little different from that..

Could anybody point me in the right direction?

Firstly, congratulations on moving over to Canon ;)

Apart from your 40D, what else will you be placing in your bag? I used a small Tenba Messenger bag from my 40D days and it happily accommodated the camera, an 18-55IS, my 100mm USM Macro and 15.4 inch MacBook Pro. The Tenba has an insert which may be removed if you just want to convert it to an overnight bag. I still have the bag which houses my backup gear. It also boasts a wealth of pockets for all manner of trinkets. The Lowepro which Lannes suggested has the advantage of an all-weather cover. That's one thing that's missing from the Tenba.

Good hunting

Hi, this reply a bit late but will add my thoughts any way. I have a Tenba Messenger Bag(small) and it houses my canon 40D. have just bought an OP/TECH sos shoulder strap for it. Great bag, lots of storage, doesnt scream "camera bag". Bill NZ

Give a look at the Think Tank Photo UD 35 bag. It will fit a gripped camera and has a space for a netbook/magazine/etc. Really nice bag.

billylid, thanks for the hint on the strap. I have the Tenba large messenger bag. It makes an incredible briefcase, except the strap isn't the best for me.
I stuff my G11 in it and go.
The camera insert is removable, if you need to carry a lot of books and stuff.
Until recently I had a dslr with a grip; that didn't fit too well. Upgraded and body doesn't have a grip. I'll get the tenba out and see if it works better for me now.

Take a look at the Domke 800 series messenger bags and the Think Tank Retrospective 20 or 30. Either is well-made and gives a lot of versatility for expansion or carrying other gear besides the camera.
