i have a 679 manfrotto monopod. xti camera, biggest lens for it would be the 55-250 (for now).
any suggestions for a good but cheap (limited funds right now) head for it, just so i have the option for portrait angle.

thank you

Manfrotto 234RC (: And it holds a 70-200 on a pro body no problem. Oh, and I've seen people use 300 2.8's on it before. A-okay.

Manfrotto 234RC (:

This.

I use it all the time with 100-400 and 300/2.8 and it's great.

The 234RC would only useful to me if I just use lenses that have tripod rings on them.

Instead of the one-way tilt head, I use a Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head on my Manfrotto 680B monopod. This lets me aim all of my lenses in any direction that I want with the monopod shaft in any direction I want it to be.

I seldom stand vertically behind a vertical monopod like the folks on the sidelines of a ball game often do. I find myself seated more often, waiting for an animal to show up or something like that. Then, the monopod is often at some oddball angle other than vertical and the camera/lens could be at any angle you can imagine from the monopod.

I have the 679B monopod with the 234RC head. I typically use it for sports where I am panning with very little up and down movement, so this setup works for me. As SkipD suggest, if you are doing more than panning a ballhead would probably be the better choice.
