Has anyone here gone thru both, and what is the overall impression between them

Right now I have 5D and a 1D MArk III, but the AF on the 5D chaps my behind.....and was thinking that a 1Ds Mark II would be the perfect replacement for my 5D

What I would expect to be better in the 1Ds:

1) AF
2) lower Noise at higher ISOs on the 1Ds.

Quick thoughts appreciated, I can't test drive the 1Ds II :)

3) Also, I have three Mark II N batteries from a body that died, so I'd have extras!! :)

I don't think the 1DsMII has lower noise. The 5D came out after it. With that said the 1DsMII is all around better in my opinion.

Just bought a very low-mileage 1DS MKii and selling my 5D. I've only taken a few frames at low ISO but results are stunning (except for a white band left by a suspected faulty shutter :( )

I also doubt the 1Ds2 has lower noise than the 5D but I don't really know. It can shoot 1 fps faster, but it's buffer can hold less shots (11 vs 17 I believe). It has an older metering system, but otherwise it is a very nice camera. It's major downside is it's price as it costs double what the 5D does and the differences are minor. The major ones being resolution and body design. For around $2k, I'd rather have a 5D2 in most cases. (Or a 5D + 7D :p)

Hmmm..it would set me back quite a bit to make the change. If I got 1500CDN for my 5d (4 batts, over two years left on full extended warranty) it would still cost me a grand for the one I'm looking at (2200 + tx, but with 3 year warranty).

But a second Mark III would only be an extra 400 or so......

The AF and ISO performance is a big thing for me.

Thanks for your input.

And Full Frame I take it? Or I would just say get a 7D, lol. I am willing to bet it has better ISO performance and better af for sure.

I have old 1dmk2 and wanted to get 1dsmk2. Got a good deal on 5d but I still long for that 1 series AF. It is fine for studio though and I am slowly getting used to small size and lower weight.

Sine you mention AF, I would make the move to 1dsmk2.

I have shot extensively with both. The 1dsmkII is far more responsive, but I hated the LCD - when I was shifting studio lights around it was very hard for me to judge the results on the screen. The interface is also for the birds. (yes, I know, pro series, but the mkIII and mkIV abandoned the crazy two finger approach, right?)

At low ISO, the images from both are similar to me. Some have said that skin tones are better on the 1DsmkII, I haven't seen that. At high ISO, at the pixel level, the 1dsmkII is CERTAINLY noisier. But if you scale it down to 12mp, it's essentially the same. The 1dsmkII clearly has a bit more resolution.

The AF system in the 1dsmkII is wonderful, but I found the center point to be LESS sensitive than the center point of the 5D. I think that's well known. Again, in good light, it's terrific.

To me, it's not worth the extra cash unless you need the much improved AF Servo focusing or really rely on the outer AF points.

I traded the 1dsmkII up/down? for a 1dmkIII - not as nice of a sensor, but my customers can't see the difference and the cam is fast and accurate and the high ISO is astounding.

According to TheHoff and a few others who have used both 5D classic and 1Ds2 they are about the same in high ISO. However they mentioned that 1Ds2 images allow you a bit more pulling. If you want better AF then definitely go with 1Ds2. However the user interface takes a bit to get used to.

If this is a 2nd/backup camera, why would you buy what you already have. Seems to me the advantage and flexibility of having a FF camera as a B-up outweighs the need for AF performance

For me, I like to shoot with my 24-70 on one body (5D at this time), and the 70-200 2/8 IS on the other body (MK III), but the AF points and performance on the MK III is so much better when I use the 5D I find myself getting annoyed with it's performance and like the idea of everything being the same with just the lenses being the difference.

I totally agree on the flexibility of the two, and a 5D image is awesome.

If I was handy, I'd try and fix my MArk II N paperweight myself. How hard can it be?? :)

I have the 1Ds2 and 1D3 duo. I use my 1Ds2 for portraits and wide angle shots exclusively. I use my 1D3 for everything else. I am in the process of swapping my 1Ds2 for a 5D+$$$ and use that cash for some nice lens or lighting gear! Like Kevin said, the 5D works well as a backup and excels at what I need it for. No need to get $2000 stuck on a gear I don't use extensively... better get $1000 stuck on gear and the other $1000 stuck on new toys!
