I visited a Great Blue Heron Colony near Ottawa last weekend with friend Jim Cumming. We ran into several other friends there including Gary Fairhead, Ted Busby & Mike Cummings. :D

The sun was behind us so lighting was good however the wind was blowing from the west so the birds landing with their backs to us. :(

All shots taken with the Canon 40D and Sigma 50-500mm.

1. A portion of the colony. I may go back and create a panorama composite.

2. Just after Landing

3. On a nest

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Birds3/BlueHeron04.jpg

3. "Karate Kid" - One stick cloned out near the left foot.

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Birds3/BlueHeron03.jpg

4. Left Bank

IMAGE: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s219/Squidcan/Birds3/BlueHeron07.jpg

5. Fly past - My personal favourite (Handheld and ~80% of full frame). In this frame there was a large out of focus branch between me and the bird but it didn't obscure the bird's face so I cloned it out with this as the result.

You did a super job on the last one Stephen. What a great bunch to be out with. They're all good photographers and I'll bet a lot of fun to shoot with.

Nice shots Stephen. We have one here with dozens of nests, but it's up a shallow and narrow channel I haven't managed to get my boat into yet. :)

Joe, Judy and Mitch thanks for the kind words. And yes Joe, it's always fun to get out with the other guys.

Great work Stephen. Wow, those chicks are going to need parachutes. That's a long way to fall, yikes.

Sounds like a fun day of shooting.

A very nice series here Stephen and I wish I had brought a wider angle to get a shot like your first one here. My favourite one in this series is the balancing act in the 4th image. Nicely done!

Beautiful & interesting sequence of shots Stephen... I particularly enjoyed the 4th shot... amazing nest heights.

Thanks Gary. Although it not a nice as your 500mm F4 the Bigma's 50-500mm range sometimes comes in handy. ;)
