A friend asked me for help, which I couldn't provide. She has no previews of her 7D CR2s in CS4 Bridge. Everything is up to date (5.6), and ACR and Photoshop can handle the files fine, but Bridge won't show the previews!

It's a new 27" iMac with the latest OS, and even the plain Mac folder can preview the CR2s ok ... what's going on with Bridge? I checked for updates, and I purged cache; that's all I could think of.

Any suggestions welcomed with gratitude.

Triple check ACR is installed properly. Update using the auto update mechanism.

Copy a few raw files to a new folder, then look at it Bridge. Report back.

Where did you purge the cache?

Thanks René, that's where I purged. I didn't realise there was any other way!

Tim, I auto-updated everywhere I could think of, then even tried manual update for good measure. I didn't try copying files to a new folder, but I certainly tried files in various different folders.

I forgot to mention, she can't see previews of raws from her old 40D either.

Just one question: when you ran the Help/Update utility did you do it from Bridge, or did you do it from Photoshop? If the latter, try running it from Bridge. Otherwise, I have no suggestions.

It still sounds like an ACR installation problem to me. On Mac's you can't just rename the old plugin file, you have to delete it or move it out of the folder altogether. A famous photographer and educator named Neil found this out the hard way, it was his thread on DWF that gave me this info.

Use Finder to search and delete all instances of the Camera Raw plug-in "Camera Raw.8bi", then run the auto-update function from Bridge. If you have multiple instances or versions of the Camera Raw plug-in, Bridge will not display thumbnails.
