I want a good wide angle lens for my 1D Mark II. I need something sharp around the corners. Doesn't need to be crazy sharp, but something decent. I just don't know what to think of the 17-40mm f/4L. Some say it's dull around the corners of FF, but I'm a 1.3x crop. Does that negate some of these issues? I wish I could afford a 21mm Zeiss, but that'll never happen.

I mean... I guess I want to be talked into a 17-40mm but eh all those bad reviews scare me. I have owned a 24mm f/2.8 Canon prime. Would that be comparable? It was plenty sharp for me.

Got any other recommendations or confirm the 17-40mm?

Thanks,
Aaron

The 1.3X will knock a little off the sides of the 17-40 but it's still plenty wide (and sharp) IMO...

I prefer to use it on a 5D but won't hesitate to use it on a MkIII either.

17-40L I find is a great number on both the 5 and 1D. I would have a look at the archives.

I still like going a touch wider with the 12-24 if I need to and still had no issues with corners.

The 17-40 is plenty sharp from edge to edge, only the corners are a bit soft, but on a 1.3 I am sure those will be taken off.

Yeah, even on full frame, the 17-40L is a great lens. It's the VERY corners we're talking about here...like less than 2% of the frame. I have never had it affect a print negatively. I've got two landscapes taken with my 17-40L and at 10x15" you can't see ANY degradation in the corners in the print, and I've got a 20x30 as well that you can only see the corner softness if you are like 3-4 inches from the print. It's a non-issue in my opinion.

On 1.3x, you won't see that very minor issue at all...it's sharp across the frame.

Try a Canon 20-35.
Great lens, works a treat
