Hi all.

I am new to the board. I have an XSI with the lenses below (came in the kit).

Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

I guess they are okay but I want to shoot more action sport outdoors and indoors (mainly kids soccer and hockey). I like the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (who doesn't) but out of my budget.

It seems that IS is the way to go if I don't carry a tripod all the time. Any other manufacturers other than Canon that offer an IS type lens in this range?

I've read some reviews of the Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG Macro HSM II Zoom Lens for Canon but it does not have IS.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4l USM Lens looks good as well, but only f/4 and no IS.

Any recommendations as to what I should look at?

Thanks.

There is a version of the Canon 70-200 f/4 with IS. I have it and it's an excellent lens.

Sigma don't have IS as IS is a tradmarked lable - they do have a very similar setup though called OS (optical stabalization) which operates in a similar manner to canon IS.

Also as Paul points out there is a Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L lens on the market.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

For the most part, when shooting sports, the IS isn't going to be as valuable because you'll need fast shutter speeds to stop motion anyways. You may be better off putting the extra bucks towards faster glass rather than IS. Maybe something like the 135 f2 or the 85 f1.8 for inside lower light conditions like you'll encounter with hockey.

Sigma is releasing a 70-200 f2.8 HSM OS (OS is Sigma's IS) in less than 2 months.

I've read some reviews of the Sigma AF 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG Macro HSM II Zoom Lens for Canon but it does not have IS.

It is an EXCELLENT lens, I would HIGHLY recommend it.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4l USM Lens looks good as well, but only f/4 and no IS.

Canon also makes a 70-200 f4 IS version

Any recommendations as to what I should look at?

If you are shooting sports, you don't really need IS. For sports you need high shutter speed to capture the action. When you get to 1/400-1/600 shutter speed, IS doesn't really do anything for you (at 200mm or less). Heck, I've gotten plenty sharp shots with my 70-200 (no IS) at 1/200 sec shutter speeds.

A used 200mm 2.8 L will cost about $600. Its light, black, fast and deadly sharp. If you need less range, the 100mm 2.0 is great for indoor sports.

bannedPermanent ban

IS does NOT counter subject movement, only hand shake.
So if you're shooting sports outside of running football players IS does NOT help

17 and learning..
