I just received this lens this week and I am very impressed with my first several shots using it. I live two miles from an Air Force Base and one of the commonly used flight patterns has the aircraft turning base over my house. I took a couple dozen photos from my backyard patio. When taking this shot, and some others, all handheld, my tracking had the plane moving all around in the viewfinder (this shot was almost straight up). I figured I would be lucky to get a good image. All of the photos I took were quite sharp and in focus.

Congrats & nice capture!

I purchased a new copy of the same lens a month ago and I find that it is very sharp, even wide open at 400mm. I was actually reluctant to buy one because all of the reviews I read talks about how the lens can vary from one copy to the next. However, when I looked at the dates of personal reviews, it seems that the newer version is much more consistent. One reviewer even mentioned that Canon may have done a silent upgrade on the lens.

I'm happy with mine.
