Mount P&S to SLR via flash shoe?

I'm interested in doing some concurrent video and still images, and was thinking about mounting my P&S via a 1/4" screw mount to the flash shoe of my camera. It's easier than having two tripods...

Anyone have an idea for this? There won't be any major motion in the setup, and if I need to explain more what I'm after, just ask.

I've seen this done in order to mount a P&S for video via the tripod collar "foot" on a 100-400.

This particular photographer prefered to have the P&S above the lens.

Search Ebay for something along the lines of flash ballhead, cost me about a fiver delivered and as a bonus it double as a flash mount with umbrella holder.

that above mount, wouldn't that put quite a bit of stress on the hotshoe if you were moving the camera all day

Depends on the top camera of course. The G5 is quite heavy for a point and shoot, my Samsung A7 however probably weighs less than most big flashes and I'm sure there are even lighter cameras out there. One thing to note with my mount is there's no lock ring, but a hairband round the bottom part and looped over the lens easily sorts that, a small sacrifice for saving a bit of money and having some added usability.

I doubt that's an issue. The 580EXII weights 475g with batteries, a G11 only weighs 355g. Heck, my Canon Vixia HF20 only weighs 400g fully loaded.

The G5 weighs 480g with the battery, only a tad more than the 580EXII.

EDIT: Also factoring in the ballhead itself, probably weighs about 20g (but I suck at estimating weights).

Not to mention the height of the mount puts the weight further away from the shoe, like a lever the weight on the end (The G5) puts more force on the mount than if the G5 were mounted directly on the shoe itself. That would be my concern more than the weight itself. Even slight movement or force applied to the G5 will translate into more force transferred to the hot shoe and could possibly damage or break it off completely.

That would be my worry as well, I would feel much better about it if the camera were right above the hotshoe because that would lead to less stress on it when movement is involved.

That is true, I didn't mention it as I would have thought that the majority of the 580's weight is near the head. Still, it certainly seems stable enough if you're not going to be swinging the camera about, which OP said he wouldn't be. OP, do you know the weight of your secondary camera? I can easily vary the weight on mine to approximate your setup and let you know if I notice any problems.

Yes, but look at where the center of gravity is situated with the PS camera mounted on that mini-ballhead. A flash mounted directly in the camera hotshoe would have less torque than a PS camera mounted on a mini-ballhead mounted in the camera hotshoe.

Custom Brackets makes a flash bracket (external link) that positions the flash alongside the camera rather than above it. Although the machining pattern on the bracket makes it difficult to attach a P&S to it, with a little modification it is possible to make it work.

I threw this together this afternoon as a demonstration, but if I were to use this on a regular basis I'd manufacture an appropriate spacer...
