Just wanted to mention that once you get into a DSLR system the first thought is to accessorize and in retrospect I wish I had got a cheaper filter to use with my kit lens and waited on the expensive filter a bit longer.
No offense, but I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It really isn't worth it to get a "cheap" filter initially since these will usually degrade your image quality. If you're a beginner just starting out, you normally wouldn't start off with pro-level equipment. Putting cheap filters on "lower grade" (for lack of a better word) equipment can only make things worse from a photographic standpoint (plus, you'd pretty much be stuck with a cheap filter when you naturally progress). Its much easier to sell off a lightly used, quality piece of gear than a POS. Since a new, 58mm B+W MRC polarizer sells for $96, you could probably list yours on the buy/sell forum and get $75 for it in a heartbeat...if its not the MRC type, you should be able to get at least $50 for it.
