Just got my 100L yesterday and the first thing I noticed it taking it out of the box was the slight rattling sound. I took off the rear lens cover and I could clearly see IS compensation moving around whenever I gave the lens a little shake which appears to be what causes this noise. Now, dont get me wrong I dont mean to make this sound like its a horrendously loud sound that makes me immediately think the lens is damaged, its just a bit louder than any other IS lens I have dealt with. When the lens is mounted to the camera and use with IS activated however, it is completely silent and the IS appears to work great!

Has anyone else out there thought the sound odd or different from their other IS lenses? Perhaps this is a result of Canon's new "hybrid" IS system?

Yes..this is the sound of the new hibryd IS system and it's normal...that's what they told me in my canon store..however this is not the worst sound you may experience using this lens..once the sound got really ugly and felt like it's something broken inside...but it has stopped , don't know why...check this thread also: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=859035

Ah, okay then. Thanks for referencing that thread. Glad Im not the only one. For a minute I was a little worried. Especially after shaking my 70-200 2.8 IS and my 100-400L and then not making the same kind of noise.
