My own belief when travelling...as LIGHT and SMALL as possible. Battery grip defeats both those goals. An extra BP511, rather than a whole battery grip, are inexpensive when you buy Sterlingtek thru web, rather than sticking with Canon brand. You'll need a BP511 charger, with or without a BG cluttering and weighing you down.

[edit] Oops, just noticed you have one of the new fangled cameras that use that new form factor battery with a smart chip in it, not the BP511. I'm not conversant about aftermarket alternatives for the new battery type.

My 5D2 and 7D suck battery life more than the 40D and 5D. But it's not terrible. I have 4 batteries that are totally interchangeable with these two cameras and all 4 are charged for any long event. But I never run out of juice to even change one, so I think with 2 extras, you're good. But the charger is very small. You can't get an adapter for it with the current they have there?

I think I will by a couple of aftermarket batteries. They lack the chip, but that just means I will get no battery info. I don't think that will be a big deal when it comes to backup batteries. I will probably still use my OEM battery most of the time. You can't reload the generic batteries with with the OEM charger, but you can charge the OEM battery with the generic charger. So, bringing only one charger to trips will be possible.

I did a quick google search. Hopefully the OEM charger will accept 100 V. Then an adapter to make the pins fit is all that's needed.

It will. All Canon's chargers support 100-240V 50-60 Hz.

Actually the charger that came with my third party batteries came with an adapter for 110v sockets. The actual charger pins are for 220V, so, free adapter :-)

Oh, sorry. My fault. I meant the generic charger.

I'm beginning to think I should ditch both the grip and the flash for the that trip. That means I don't need any AAs at all. :)

meh I would like to have the option of having the flash instead of just the pop up flash, since you could even use it to a limited extent as an off camera flash

And you have Phottix? I will try to find those here in Sweden. :)

I just got an email back from Phottix about their Phottix® TITAN LP-E6 Li-ion 1600 mAh battery + Charger, to say that their charger cannot charge orginal Canon LP-E6 batteries.

" Hi

no, it will not charge the original Canon LP-E6.

I guess if you have the charger and it can charge the original batteries then it must be able to.

Phottix advertising sometimes doesn't match their product function eg. They advertised that their Hector remote could control AF on their website, but when I got one it couldn't, so I emailed them and they admitted it can't.
