Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM vs Sigma AF 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM DC

If you had to choose one which would it be?

Well actually just like the question say's,, yes I do have it and it will be sold tomorrow seems like every sigma lens I buy needs to be sent in for calibration and I'm sick of it,,, I also just bought the EF 60 2.8 Macro and it is fantastic;0

Why do you ask then?

I ask because I want to buy the EF 28 1.8 and was wondering if it compared well to the sigma,, if not I will keep my sigma so I don't sell it for nothing, see after I got it calibrated it is a pretty sharp lens.

I chose Sigma - it was cheaper than 28mm and my copy was sharp and focused like it should right out of the box. IMHO it's not fair and hardly possible to compare directly a fast 'normal' lens with a short telephoto true macro lens - I have both and they are completely different lenses for different purposes.
imho send your Sigma for calibration if needs be and have fun with it, if you really aren't happy with your 30mm - sell it and get 28mm, you will gain faster AF and loose f/1.4 and lots of fun. I like Canon 28mm, but this lens is a bit dull imho.

I did have it calibrated and it is very sharp now, I was just thinking maybe canon lenses are better to be put on canon bodies (although my sigma focuses pretty fast anyway),, anyway after reading Lightrules review on both lenses maybe I shouldn't sell my sigma

Threads about these two lenses and the Canon 35mm come up every other day, please open your eyes and see the search function on the top bar of the page..You'll find about 30 threads about the exact same comparison..

if it's calibrated and it's sharp and there is no back/front focus issues - keep it and have lots of fun with it. imho there is no all that much difference between Canon's USM and Sigma's HSM. USM is a tad faster (not sure about it) and may be a little bit more precise in low light, but I honestly can't see much difference. Both lenses are great, but the only 28mm I used was quite soft wide open and only picked up sharpness at f/2-2.2. My 30mm is good wide open and by f/2-2.2 is very sharp.

When in doubt, just choose the lens that will look cooler on your camera

Really? Don't you think jumping down a guys throat when they've asked about comparing 2 lenses when you've done it yourself before is really bad form?

OP - Since you've gotten your Sigma calibrated and it's as it should be, I'd just keep it and have fun with it. It's a great lens and everything I've read suggests it's on par with, if not better than the the Canon 28. Of course I am biased since I have the 30 and love it.
