I bring it to life by either:

1.) removing the lens - then reattaching it or...
2.) removing the battery grip and also reattaching it.

Happens once in a blue moon (again yesterday) but a royal pain in the arse when it does.

No logic - not the same lens either. I doubt it's the contacts because I own two 50D's and it happens on both. (One is not gripped though). I turn the camera on... then nothing. I don't even swap out the batteries first anymore because I know that's not it.

Humidity maybe? It's been pretty dry. Nothing is overheating because the camera can sit idle for an hour then fail to start until I perform the above voodoo.

A 40D did the same thing, totally died in the middle of a ceremony, a week later it's ok again. Otherwise that series of cameras does hiccup occasionally. Not much you can do about it. I'm told 1 series cameras do it sometimes too.

Yes, I'm beginning to just chalk this up to the canon gods.

My 50D also last croaked during a ceremony. It was during a minister's speech so no big deal.

Occasionally my 40d's wheel will stop working. HAve to turn it off, take out the battery, and wait for a minute, then it's fine.

Never figured it out.

Try a hard reboot, clear all settings manually, then pull both batteries. Make sure it has the latest firmware.
Make sure all contacts are clean.

May have a pcb failure if it keeps acting up, and especially if it gets worse. Always protect cams from moisture...

One battery removal sometimes to cure "lense lock-ups" but the need for multiple hard reboots suggest deeper issues.
If you need to remove both batteries and it's happened multiple times, try reflashing the firmware.
Otherwise sounds like a hardware failure.

Another failed unleaded solder joint?
Yeah, no lead solder was a great idea, just like prescription vitamins.... thank the European Union for those swell laws that screwed up countless lives for a few dollars more.

Try a "hard reboot" by pulling both batteries. This may cure it.
