Y'know how monitor manufacturers sometimes boast their monitor's gamut as a percentage of the Adobe RGB gamut? Eg "98% of Adobe RGB" or whatever.

Well, does anybody know the exact comparison between sRGB and Adobe RGB? I mean, is sRGB 70% of Adobe RGB? 80%? 90%?

Good question. The charts on this page estimate it for highlights, midtones and shadows.

With my system, (normal gamut monitor and printer) I see the biggest color shift with very "electric" greens. My printer has a special extended blue cartridge so I can print blues far beyond the sRGB gamut.

i dont think thats the right way to look at it. The gamut is not linear in scope, so where one may be overall wider than the other, its not consitent thorugh the entire range. If you look at 3d color space plots, you will see, one may be larger overall, but as far as an excact percentage, I dont think that can be applied.

Yes, I assumed that percentage value would be a measure of volume, as calculated by 3D modeling. I hoped somebody might have some of that fancy profiling software that allowed such calculations. I'm very curious.

Anybody on Windows can download their free Color Settings Applet which will let you model and rotate color spaces all day long. It will also compare two spaces. Here are Adobe RGB and sRGB. Adobe RGB is the grey "ghost" and where you see color sRGB is bigger and poking through. The first view is from "above", from the white point, and the second is from the side.

As you can see above, it is not just a simple matter of saying Adobe RGB has a bigger gamut - it is mostly bigger in the green direction, somewhat bigger in yellow, red and cyan, less in magenta and in blue it is even very slightly smaller.

Thanks Elie, yes, I have that applet, and I've made that comparison. I was hoping for a quantitative answer, in percentage - somebody must know.

By the way, you said "anybody on Windows can download the applet". I was of the understanding that it was only for XP - is there a version for more recent Windows as well?

I guess I misspoke. I am also XP and I assumed there were versions for the newer systems without really knowing. Sorry.

Maybe on Vista and 7 it is possible to run it in 'XP mode'.

It would be great if it worked, or was available, for newer Windows. It's a great little app.
