Hey

So I have a 400D (XTi) with the non-IS kit lens and I've heard that its not so hot compared to the newer, IS version.

You can pick the IS up for around £100 ($153) but I have the chance to get one for £50.
Basically, is it worth it for £50, and if I miss out on this deal, would £100 be worth it for a poor student. £100 isn't cheap to me.

Already have a Nifty Fifty and a Tamron 55 - 200 so the question is either upgrade or nothing.

Thanks

ps would probably hang on to the non-IS for resale value.

For 50 pounds I'd do it. IS is worth that much to me!

If you look at the MTF charts, it is sharper throughout the it's range and from edge to edge. It does pin cushion a bit more but controls vignetting a little better. If you can get one for £50 and if you can sell the non-IS version for anything more than zero, it sounds like a pretty good deal.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The IS version is better, but the IS is secondary to the improved optics of the IS version.

A used 18-55 IS is simply the best value of any Canon lens available.

Thanks for the replys.

Hopefully will get this one, if not might have to look into buying one for a bit more.

Its mainly the improved IQ I was wondering about, and looks like its worth it.

Cheers

Inexpensive, easy to use, very good results. No problems, no complaints.

18-55 is a very capable lens and 18-55 IS really surprised me!

Go for it. Snobs slam the "kit" lens. I think that's not fair. It is a great "bang for buck" lens. You can take great shots with it. And it fills in the short/wide end of your collection. IS is nice...haven't found a human yet getting younger by the day.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

right, I did not have the old version but the newer 18-55IS is optically good and the IS is a plus if you need it
