I know there are a bunch of gear suggestion threads, I searched through many of them non of them addressed my questions.

I am not a new shooter, My first DSLR was the XT back in 2006, I've also shot with the Nikon D80, Canon XSI & 40D.

I Currently have no gear at all and will be shooting as a 2nd shooter on a few weddings, I have a budget of about $1500-$1700 and need a Body & Lens set up. I'm looking for suggestions?

I should note that I plan on renting back up gear + extra lenses.

Any advise would be very helpful
TIA

If you're not opposed to Used Gear I'd say you should go with a 40D and 28-70 F/2.8L, that'll leave you with enough cash to purchase a decent Flash which might also come in handy.

Gear: 6D, 7D, 50D, 40D, Canon 28-135mm IS, Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.4,Canon 70-200 IS f/2.8L, Canon 28-70 f/2.8L, Canon 17-40 f/4L

The 28 will not be wide enough at times...24-105 would be great if you have flash. The 24-70 is definitely the ultimate wedding lens though.

A tamron 17-50 would be a much better choice. I spent 2 years as a second shooter with a 17-60 on a crop (20d) and it did a very good job. I'd say 40d, tammy 17-50, and 580ex as a start

Current: 5DM3, 6D, 8mm fish, 24-105/4IS, 35/2IS, 70-200/2.8IS, 85/1.8, 100-400/IS v1, lensbaby composer with edge 80, 580's and AB800's
Formerly: 80D, 7D, 300D, 5D, 5DM2, 20D, 50D, 1DM2, 17-55IS, 24-70/2.8, 28-135IS, 40/2.8, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 70-200/4IS, 70-300IS, 70-200/2.8, 100 macro, 400/5.6, tammy 17-50 and 28-75, sigma 50 macro & 100-300
