Thought some of you might appreciate this. The first ~2:30 is a basic GND tutorial really, then I dive into how to use filters on lenses that can't use them in the traditional sense. I shoot my video reviews in one take early in the morning w/o any practice really, I'm sure that's painfully obvious, but it is what it is. I find I'm more honest that way. ;)

Subscribing. As a samyang 14mm may be in my future, I've fretted over the fact that there is no easy way to mount filters

Seriously, you did great Chris Hemsworth.;) :) The review was thorough and detailed. I was a bit worried about those waves behind you. Isn't this how you lost your 5D MK II? :)

that's actually shot WITH my 5Dii... ;) It still works, just not the mount, so no AF and now aperture control... But I have 2 alternative lenses for it, so it's perfect for these reviews. The 5Dii was lost a block down the road though, here:

this is the overall view of where I lost it, I was on TOP of the big rock: http://benjacobsenphoto.com …zard-road-ii/img_8730.jpg (external link)
this is the weekend I lost it, it got wet up on that rock where the fishermen are: http://benjacobsenphoto.com …rricane-bill/img_1780.jpg (external link)
same spot again: http://benjacobsenphoto.com …rricane-bill/img_1907.jpg (external link)
this is the last shot it took AFTER getting wet: http://www.benjacobsen.com …-week-update/img_2157.jpg (external link)
this is a different storm months later: http://benjacobsenphoto.com …ery/hazard-v/bbj_4422.jpg (external link)

basically, I'd shot there 2 days in a row and it was probably my 10th time shooting that location. The rock I went on was dry and had a great view of the smaller rock getting pummeled... So I went up there and the ONLY wave that got that spot wet in the ~4 hours I'd spent there in 2 days was when I was up there. The rock was actually dry when I climbed up there. Mother Nature KNOWS! But yeah, that last shot, had I ever seen it like that BEFORE I did it I wouldn't have gone. That next storm was MUCH worse...

we were both shooting from there all morning. We both were wet up to about our knees. This is where he's shooting from in that pic:

but no, his camera didn't get wet. You can see the rocks I went up on in that last shot...

aw ok.. he got lucky I guess hehe

I have another question... why didn't you use the Cokin universal ring adapter and instead opt for a 2nd lens cap adapter to be milled out?

I asked because I saw another DIY job in flickr like this:
here is the link http://www.flickr.com …/13847280@N03/2655841619/ (external link)

any thoughts? I am wondering though why he needed to use a piece of pvc pipe when he can just screw the universal adapter to the hood.

yeah, easily answered as that was what I used originally (I still have it in my camera junk drawer). The first reason is because that ring costs $150 (I should probably try to sell mine). The second is it's a massive PITA to get it centered because you have to very carefully twist each screw in the same amount or you'll get vignetting on the side that's too tight. And finally, it will scratch/mark up your lens. He's using the PVC because it means he can set the universal up ONCE and make sure it's even and avoid scratching the lens up, but he's still got a more expensive solution (-vs- a $60 ring and $30 hood/cap). That and the universal's screws are long enough it's a major PITA to fit in a bag....

so while that works, it's a PITA and not as nice looking and costs more. ;)

aha!! yeah that makes sense hehe :) I was originally thinking that its pretty cool (the universal adapter) because I can use it with any lens from 62mm up... but now that you mentioned about screwing it in place and making it center...yeah its a PITA indeed hehe

thank you for your response :)
