I read someone that the 100-400 was the most popular lens for airshows...
Very nicely done.

psstt Gary have you seen/tried the new Sigma 50-500mm OS?
the original lens (without OS - which is sigma talk for IS) was rated very well against the 100-400mm in terms of image quality and now that the lens has stabalization and a new price point only just a little over the 100-400mm L its worth giving the lens a look (though most are still waiting for some good reviews and comparisons to start getting about)

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Just do it!

I have one and it's just great. Older reviews say that there are variations in the production. I've read that the newer ones are much more consistent. There was talk that Canon did a silent upgrade of the lens a couple of years ago -- which explains why newer reviews are much more positive.

I've had it only a month and like it a lot. Checkout my Flickr (external link) page for a few shots I uploaded last week!

Do you know how the 50-500 OS rates against the 150-500 OS? Thats the one I was thinking of getting if I dont get the 100-400L

Here's a credible review of several lenses in that zoom range. Also, take a look at his work. This guy is good.
