Hi all I know this has been done before but I need some help to decide on another lens to add to my selection. I have a 50d with kit lens 18-200, 50 1.8 and EFS60 macro. I have an option of a 17-40F4L, a 70-200f4L or EFS10-22mm. I could also afford either a 10-20 f3.5 sigma or 11-16 tokina. Thank you in advance for your help

Your choices cover both wide and telephoto ranges. I think first you're going to need to decide which one is more important to you right now. If you go wide I think the 10-22 would be a better choice if you don't have any plans to do FF or film.

Cheers. I am more into landscape, so I guess it's either the 17-40 or 10-22. I wont be going ff for quite some time, so not an issue at this time. The 17-40's are easier to come by second hand over here than the 10-22.

The 17-40 duplicates what you already have in your 18-200, and at the apertures you'll be using for landscapes, you're not going to notice any significant difference (or even any difference at all) in your images. Personally I'd go for a range you don't yet have - the 10-22 or another wide-angle.

The only thing I have for you is the review I have of the 70-200 f4 and the 17-40. Both are great lenses. I have them. The 17-40 is going to give you much better images than you can imagine. If you shoot wide a lot, that lens is well worth the money. I use my 70-200 f4 less now since I got the 2.8 IS version, but in bright light, it's wonderful and I love it.

if you like landscape go ultrawide. I have the sigma 10-20 and its awesome. The perspective it gives you is something totally new over what you already have and you will love it. After that save up for a 70-200 L.

I have the kit lens but never use it... the only lenses i use are in my sig.

The Tokina is the best UWA for crop Canons.

70-200 is often used for landscapes, too. (Seriously)

A million arguments on this, but no, not necessarily. The Canon has better flare resistance, goes 10% wider and 40% longer and has ring USM. So it depends how you define better.

Depends on what you want to do with the lens...If you want landscape shots than go with the tokina 11-16 as it is 2.8 and super sharp. I would stay away from the 17-40, personally from what ive seen and heard it really isnt all that in iq and is f4. If you really want something in that range than the 17-55, but you have it covered with the 18-200. If you want a zoom id save for the 70-200 2.8 non is if you plan doing day shots with a fast shutter. Thats what id do anyway. Gl tho what ever you decide!

Hi All

Thank you for all the advice. I have ended up with a used 17-40. Next on my list of to haves will be the 10-22 or the Tokina 11-16. I would like the 70-200 2.8 IS too but it will have to wait awhile yet.

Cheers

You must mean the 17-40. It's a great lens. Using it tomorrow for a large group outdoor shot.
