GBH doing a 'touch & go' landing on a dam

I got to know this particular GBH quite well and I think the bird got used to seeing me hanging out by the pond with my camera. I would set up a lawn chair and sit right by the dam. Relaxing place to sit and hang out and take pictures. These pictures were shot with the 5D2 and 200mm f2.0 & 1.4X TC, so an EFL of 280mm. The landing picture is Av Mode f4.0 & 1/400th. The jumping off and Take Off shot is Av Mode f2.8 and 1/1000th.

#1 looks like a 747 on touchdown! Full flaps, ground and flight spoilers up. This is the GBH's wing in the 'dirty' configuration. Enjoy!

I have always thought it was neat how the feathers would be up like that on the back of the wings, I am guessing from being on the low pressure side of the flight surface in that situation. Great pictures.

Funny how man has imitated this feature from birds when designing airplanes! It looks very cool. This was one of the first times I noticed the feathers doing this action.

It is a great place! Those with some local NJ knowledge may recognize the location. I just happened to luck out and find this lone GBH and "his" pond. When I was in the mood to sit, wait, relax, and hope to capture some nice pictures, this was one of my favorite spots to try out. I'd say I had a 70/30 success rate there. This spot is also wonderful for some spectacular fall folliage HDR shots.

He's got the spoilers up to keep form overshooting his landing.
